Geothermal Energy Presented By: Amanda Aywas
What is geothermal energy? Renewable resource: “the water is replenished by rainfall and the heat is continuously produced by earth” ● Comes from heat within the earth ● “Heat is continuously produced within the earth by slow decay of radioactive particles that is natural in all rocks” ● 5, 000 -11, 000 degrees F ● When magma is transferred to water, a “usable form of geothermal energy is created”
History/Development: America ● 1904: geothermal energy was used to make electricity by a group of Italians; they used generators ● 1960: “hydrothermal plant opened at the geysers, 28 plants are operating there today * Native Americans, Romans, and Chinese all used mineral springs for cooking, heating, and bathing * “Electricity is now produced from geothermal energy in 21 countries, including the U. S”
Pros and cons: Pros: ● Always have access, will never run out ● “Greenest” renewable energy source. ● Tax credit for people who use it in their homes Cons: ● Expensive to build plants ● Earth’s crust will constantly have to be drilled deeply into ● Hazardous for people and machinery because of the scorching temperatures
Present use: Types: hydrothermal, geopressured, hot dry rock, magma ● Hydrothermal is the main source of energy we use out of the four ● Heating and electricity ● Benefits: tax credit for the people who use it ● 3, 790 megawatts of energy was generated by the end of 2013 Potential case study: which energy source works best? ● Dry steam power ● Flash steam power ● Binary cycle power
Future plans: The University of Minnesota and Ohio State University have created a design for a geothermal power plant that “leverages unwanted, carbon dioxide to boost both output and efficiency compared to conventional geothermal plants. ” ● Will enable geothermal power generation in many states including the east coast, according to research teams Recommendation: Personally I strongly think this plan should be put into action. People should be able to have the option to convert to geothermal energy because it is a greenergy source and people are given tax credits. https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=rf. UQy 86 ZMp. Q
