GEOSS Demos Lessons Learned • Application-specific demos are a great way to engage with user communities that would not necessarily look to OGC standards. • Emphasize message about using distributed components with open standards vs. standalone application • Tremendous enthusiasm and commitment of agencies and research groups to collaborate • Demo provides a fast-track to skills development and knowledge transfer. • Live demo is compelling but dependent upon communications networks that may not be reliable at workshops • Live demo should be accompanied by a pre-recorded demo • Presentation of the demo works best with two projectors: one for the client application, the other for a powerpoint presentation explanation • Start early to get satellite data • Desirable to involve participants from the local region • Keep it simple, focus on the magic of interoperability • GEOSS Demos are persistent using OGC Network – http: //www. ogcnetwork. net/GEOSSdemos Helping the World to Communicate Geographically

OGC Demo at ISRSE GEOSS Workshop Lessons Learned Thus Far • Capabilities files remain challenging for automatic parsing by the tested clients • Manual examination of Capabilities XML files and coding of layers into clients may circumvent automated parsing of Capabilities documents • Implementation of symbology and legend image support is uneven • Some advertised services do not provide needed performance for remote mapping applications • OGC WCS is not yet supported by any of the utilized clients • -> Work is continuing on experimentation with available data in client interfaces to develop smooth presentation Helping the World to Communicate Geographically

Demo Scenario Theme: Sustainable dev through EO, Agriculture • Gather existing information about agriculture of area – Earth observation data from satellite-based sensors • Task UAV • Acquire UAV data • Combine data for decision support or research regarding sustainable agriculture of coffee in Costa Rica. Helping the World to Communicate Geographically
GEOSS Societal Benefit area goal: 4. 1. 8 - Agriculture • Supporting sustainable agriculture and combating desertification Issues addressed by GEOSS will include: – crop production; livestock, aquaculture and fishery statistics; food security and drought projections; nutrient balances; farming systems; land use and land-cover change; and changes in the extent and severity of land degradation and desertification. • GEOSS implementation will address the continuity of critical data, such as high-resolution observation data from satellites. • A truly global mapping and information service, integrating spatially explicit socioeconomic data with agricultural, forest, and aquaculture data will be feasible, with applications in poverty and food monitoring, international planning, and sustainable development. • GEOSS 10 Year Plan Reference Document, page 202 Helping the World to Communicate Geographically
