Georgia’s Location • Georgia is located in the northern hemisphere, on the continent of North America, in the southeastern corner of the U. S. • Georgia is bordered by 5 states, as well as the Atlantic Ocean
Georgia’s Geographic Regions • There are 5 geographic regions of Georgia – this means there are 5 different landform regions in Georgia • They are – The Blue Ridge Mountains – Valley and Ridge – Appalachian Plateau – Piedmont – Coastal Plain
Blue Ridge Mountains • Located in the northeastern part of the state • Georgia’s highest and largest mountains are found here • The area is good for growing vegetables and apples
Valley and Ridge • This area lies between the Blue Ridge Mountains and Appalachian Plateau • There are large ridges of rocks that lead into valleys • It is known for its industry, as well as good farmland apple orchards
Appalachian Plateau • Smallest geographic region in Georgia • Located in the northwestern corner of the state • There are plateaus as well as valleys in this area • Nature fans visit to view large waterfalls and rock formations
Piedmont • Begins in the mountains foothills in north Georgia and goes to the central part of the state • Largely made up of gently sloping hills • About one-half of the state’s population lives in the Piedmont • Large rivers run through it, making farming a large industry
Coastal Plain • The largest region of the state • There are two parts: the Inner Coastal Plain and the Outer Coastal Plain • The Inner Coastal Plain is the major agricultural region of the state • The Outer Coastal Plain contains large areas of swampland
Georgia’s Main Landforms • Fall Line: where the Piedmont meets the Coastal Plain • Okefenokee Swamp: North America’s largest swamp • Appalachian Mountains: Georgia’s three northern regions are part of these • Chattahoochee River: Flows from the North Georgia mountains south into the Gulf of Mexico • Savannah River: Runs along Georgia’s border with South Carolina • Barrier Islands: chain of islands on Georgia’s coast
Climate of Georgia • The climate of Georgia is overall mild with a subtropical feel along the coast • We have 4 seasons, with generally comfortable temperatures during the year – This attracts large companies to Georgia because people want to live in warmer climates • Georgia averages about 40 -76 inches of rain a year, which helps the agriculture industry
