Biography: George William Joy was born in Dublin, Ireland, on July 7, 1844. At a young age he had a foot injury and his father declared him inapt for the militar service. Joy was then educated at “Harrow School” and pursued a career as an artist. He studied at “London’s South Kensington School of Art” and, later, at the “Royal Academy”, under John Everett Millais, Frederic Leithton and Frederic George Watts. In 1868 he went to Paris where he studied for two years. Coming back to London, Joy established himself as a History and genre painter and was a frequent exhibitor at the “Royal Academy”, at the “Salon des Artistes Français” and at the “Royal Hibernian Academy”. He became a member of the “Royal Institute of Oil Painters” in 1895. The artist died in Purbrook, Hampshire, on October 28, 1925. Griselda, 1903
