Geometry Day 2 Objective: Chapter 1 Foundations of Geometry Lesson 1 -1 Students will be able to model points, lines, and planes
Study guide: Preview Chapter 1 • Vocabulary connections • 1) undefined term- most basic geometry figures that cannot be defined using other figures • 2) Coordinate plane- numbers used to describe location on a flat surface • 3) Point – place on a map • 4) transformation – moving a shape
Undefined terms (points, lines, and planes) are the building blocks of geometry • These cannot be defined using other figures • Point – names a location and has no size. It is represented by a dot • Line – a straight path that has no thickness and extends forever in both directions • Postulate – Through any two points there is exactly one line • Plane – a flat surface that has no thickness and extends forever • Postulate – Through any three noncollinear points there is exactly one plane containing them. • Postulate – If two points lie in a plane, then the line containing those points lies in the plane. **Postulate (axiom)- a statement that is accepted as true without proof.
Naming points, lines, and planes •
Segments and Rays • Segment (line segment) is the part of a line consisting of two points and all the points between them. • Ray is a part of a line that starts at an endpoint and continues forever in one direction.
Practice section 1 -1 • Draw and label a segment with endpoints C and D • Draw and label opposite rays with a common endpoint K • Draw and label a ray with endpoint T that contains point R
Complete the following graphic organizer Undefined Terms
Show each • A line on a plane • A line intersecting a plane that does not lie on it • 2 planes intersecting • 2 lines that intersect in one point but are on different planes
