Geometry Congruent and Similar Shapes Grade 2 2/7/10 Kristen Cartwright

Congruence The definition of congruence is when two plane figures have the same size and shape. These stop signs are congruent because they have the same size and shape.

Ways To Tell If A Figure Is Congruent If two figures have the same size and amount of sides, then they are congruent. Take one figure and lay it on top of another figure. If the figures line up perfectly, then they are congruent.

Are these windows congruent? Yes, they are!

Similarity If figures have the same shape but not necessarily the same size, they are called similar. Although these coins are all the same shape, they are all different sizes which makes them similar.

Are these speakers Similar? No, they are congruent. They are the same size and shape. Are these heads of lettuce similar? Yes , they are!

Things To Remember! Congruent figures have the same size and shape. If one figure lines up perfectly with another figure then they are congruent. Similar figures may be the same shape but they are not the same size.
