Geography Knowledge Organiser: Year 8 Unit 2 – International Development Essential Key Terms Development Indicators Development The process of countries changing over time for the better through economic growth and technology. GDP (Gross Domestic Product) The total value of the goods and services a country produces over a year. It is measured in dollars. Development Indicator A piece of information that helps to show us how developed a country is. GDP Person (PP) Developed country Somewhere with a wide range of services, good infrastructure and little poverty. The GDP of a country divided by its total population. Can be used to compare wealth of different countries. PPP (Purchasing Power Parity) Developing Country Somewhere with a low income where people might be poor but is starting to develop over time. An adjustment made to the GDP to take into account that a dollar buys more in some countries than others. Life Expectancy How long in years people can expect to live for on average. Economy All of the business and financial activity in a country from producing, supplying, consuming and selling good and services. Infant Mortality Percentage of children who die before they reach their 1 st birthday. Birth rate Geographical factors of development A country’s location, climate and natural resources can all play a part in its development. Exports Selling of goods or services to another country. Imports Development Gap Poverty Purchasing (buying) goods or services from another country. The difference in levels of development between the world’s richest and poorest countries. Lack of the means to meet basic needs such as food, clothing and shelter. High Income Country HIC – a country with a high GDP person (PPP). Low Income Country LIC – a country with a low GDP person (PPP) Newly Emerging Economy NEE – a country which is experiencing rapid development.
