Geography – Coasts WALT: Understand the human and physical features of coasts.
Before we start… Before we starting learning about coasts, I want you to have a look at the pictures on the next slide and write down anything you already know about coasts – this can be anything!
Coasts
The United Kingdom • The United Kingdom is where we live, and it has lots of coasts! • Watch this video to find out more about the United Kingdom: Geography | KS 1 | KS 2 | The United Kingdom | BBC Teach – You. Tube
What are human and physical features? • Human and physical features are things that you can see all around you. • Physical features like seas, mountains and rivers are natural. They would be here even if there were no people around. • Human features like houses, roads and bridges are things that have been built by people.
What is a coast? • A coast is a place where the sea meets the land. Have a look at these pictures of coasts:
Physical features of coasts Beach: this is an area covered with sand or small rocks that is next to the sea.
Physical features of coasts Cliffs: A cliff is a steep rock, often found along the edge of the sea.
Human features of coasts Harbour: This is a place on a coast where ships and boats can be kept safely when they are not being used.
Human features of coasts Port: This is where ships and boats can load and unload people or goods.
Key vocabulary we have learnt today • Coast – where the sea meets the land. • Beach – This is an area of sand or rocks next to the sea. • Cliff – a steep rock, often alongside the edge of the coast. • Harbour – a place where ships and boats are kept safe when they are not being used. • Port – a place where ships and boats can load and unload people and goods
Your activity • I would like you to sort the key features of a coast into either human or physical features. • Remember physical features are natural and would be here even if people were not, and human features have been built/made by humans. • Challenge activity: draw a picture of a coast and label any features you draw!
Key vocabulary/features of the coast: 1. Beach – sandy and pebbled beaches 2. Cliff 3. Harbour 4. Port 5. The sea Physical features of the coast: Human features of the coast:
