Basin and Range Map
Basin and Range Region • This region is located west of the Rocky Mountains and east of the Sierra Nevadas and the Cascades. • The elevations of this region varies, as it contains isolated mountain ranges and Death Valley, the lowest point in North America.

Appalachian Mountains Description • The Appalachian Mountains are located west of the Coastal Plain extending from eastern Canada to western Alabama, including the Piedmont. • The Appalachian Mountains have typical characteristics consisting of old, eroded mountains (oldest in North America).

Canadian Shield Description • The Canadian Shield is wrapped around the Hudson Bay in a horseshoe shape. • It has a beautiful Interior, including hills worn by erosion and hundreds of lakes carved by glaciers. • This regions has some of the oldest rock formations found in North America.

Coastal Plain Region Description • The Coastal Plain is located along the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico. The Coastal Plain has broad lowlands. • There are many enormous ships in the Coastal Plain region, because there are many excellent harbors that are found along the Coastal Plain.

Coastal Range Region • The Coastal Range has rugged mountains along the Pacific Coast. • It stretches from California to Canada. • There are many fertile valleys in this region.

The Great Plains Region • The Great Plains is located west of the Interior Lowlands and east of the Basin and Range. • Great Plains Region has flat land that gradually increases in elevation westward, with grasslands. • This region also has the great Missouri River. It is considered a transportation artery for farm and industrial products, and a link to ports and other parts of the world.

Interior Lowlands Region Description • The Interior Lowlands is located west of the Appalachian Mountains and east of the Great Plains. Typical characteristics of the Interior Lowlands include rolling flatlands with many rivers, broad river valleys, and grassy hills. • The great Mississippi River is also part of this region. It is considered a transportation artery for farm and industrial products, and a link to ports and other parts of the world.

Rocky Mountains Region Description • The Rocky Mountains is located west of the Great Plains and east of the Basin and Range. • The Rocky Mountains are rugged mountains stretching from Alaska almost to Mexico with high elevations. • The Colorado River is in this region. The directional flow of the Colorado is determined by the Continental Divide.
