Fantasy z. Animal characters may act like people zcharacters may have special powers zcharacters may be imaginary beings zsetting may be in another time (future) zusually has a good vs. evil conflict zmay use scientific principles not yet available or discovered
Informational z. Tells facts that can be looked-up or proven ztells about real events zcharacters have really lived zmay have maps, diagrams and illustrations to explain the facts zauthor is an expert on the subject
Biography ztells about the life of a real person z. Person can be living z. Usually told in chronological zfactual information
Mystery z. Usually has some sort of case to solve z. Involves a detective z. Uses words such as motive, alibi, and red herring z. Usually full of suspense
Adventure z. Main character overcomes adversity z. Events are extremely exciting z. Sometimes a story of survival z. There is a hero or heroine z. There is often some kind of journey
Classic Literature z. Stories that have lasted over a very long time z. You grandparents or great-grandparents may have also read the same story z. It does not “go out of style”
Historical Fiction z. Story that takes place in a certain period of history z. Either the events or the characters are fictional z. Author usually elaborates on the events and characters to make a better story
Science Fiction z. Story might involve technology that has not been invented z. May take place in an alternate world z. Might involve aliens or other creatures or robotics z. Very similar to the fantasy genre
