PROSE Prose is any type of writing that is not poetry. There are two

PROSE Prose is any type of writing that is not poetry. There are two main types of prose: v Non-Fiction: Factual writing about real people, places, things, and events. v Fiction: Stories which are made up or not completely true. Sometimes writers use real experiences as the basis for a fictional story.

NON-FICTION Examples of non-fiction prose include: v Essay: A short piece of non-fiction writing

NON-FICTION Examples of non-fiction prose include: v Essay: A short piece of non-fiction writing that is focused on a single topic. Essays can be formal in tone and very structured, or they may be more informal, personal, and humorous. v Biography: The whole story of someone’s life, written by somebody else. A biography is too large to be written in an essay format. v Autobiography: The whole story of someone’s life, written by that person. An autobiography is similar to a biography in length.

FICTION Examples of fictional prose include: v Short Stories: A short work of fiction with a few characters and a plot. Short stories are usually about 520 pages long. v Novel: A long work of fiction, containing many characters, plots, subplots, and themes. Novels are usually over 100 pages long. v Novella: A medium length work of fiction, similar to a novel. A novella is usually between 20 -100 pages in length.

Legends combine historical facts with fictional events. v Science Fiction: A fictional story that normally takes place in the future and contains technology that has not yet been invented.

Myths were often used to explain mysterious forces of the universe or to teach moral lessons. v Folk Tale: A story that reflects a particular culture and people. Folk tales often contain common features, called motifs, which are found in stories from many parts of the world. v Fairy Tale: A story that involves fantastic forces and beings, such as fairies, wizards, witches, and goblins. In fairy tales, improbable events lead to a happy ending.
