SCI- FI CONVENTIONS • Typical conventions viewers may expect from a sci-fi movie may contain: • An outer space setting, ( a different planet, alternate universe, in the future) • The popular sci-fi film “ Star Wars” is set in outer space, which • follows theme of advance technology (spaceships and robots) • People watching a sci-fi film usually expect to see a different version of the world.

• Use of technology: • Many sci-fi films express the use of advance and impressive technology which usually plays an important part in the narrative. This also ties in with the idea of a futuristic setting. “ I, robot” Is a sci-fi film which narrative is based around the idea that Technology has been advanced so much to the point that planet earth has a danger of being taken over by robots. This is an example of how technology can inspire the narrative. Aliens or supernatural creatures: • Majority of sci-fi films contain unknown creatures which links in with the idea of an alternate world or life on another planet.

CRIME AND GANGSTER • Crime and gangster films are usually set in an urban or unsafe environment, for example the bad side of a city. These setting are usually used as it is uncommon and less realistic for a high crime rate in a quiet neighbourhood or an unpopular quiet village. • Money usually plays an important part in the protagonists task. It is very common that money is normally behind the motive of the main character which most likely involves doing an illegal job. • Violence • gangsters are commonly portrayed as intimidating and tough, this useually leads to many violent scenes/fight scenes.

• Use of guns and weapons: • Following theme of illegal jobs and going against the law, weapons and guns are normally involved in the act of intimidation and fight scenes. • Male lead character • The main characters of crime and gangster films are more commonly male. Majority of the time they are portrayed as a physically strong confident man.
