Genomics England Key messages 2
Key messages Genomics England 3 Why do we need to change? § We are moving on, from an organisation set up to deliver a project, to a sustainable company § GEL was hugely successful in delivering the 100 K Genomes Project but we are not structured to support our new model, or our future ambitions § We have listened to your feedback to develop our strategy and an operating model which will allow us to deliver on our ambitions. § We have the opportunity to make a significant contribution to the future of healthcare, not only in the UK, but globally. § To deliver, we must be ‘Future Fit’. Change can be tough – but it’s worth the climb. Some things have already changed, and will not change again for the foreseeable future: § In the past year, we have had a new CEO, a new Chair and a new strategy. We have built the foundations for our future and now we can concentrate on delivering on our strategy. To do that, we need the right operating model, and we need to embrace the new ways of working. § We also have a number of new ELT members who have joined since last September. Together with those who have been with GEL for longer, this team have the skills and experience to lead the organisation into the future. § This is a journey which we are all travelling together, and we need everybody to be part of the change.
Key messages Genomics England What does the new model look like? • We’ll all ‘live’ in directorates and sub-groups called chapters, which is a group of people with similar skills. This is where everybody’s day to day admin and management is based. Then, people from different directorates come together to deliver on key elements of our strategy in tribes. • We are not downsizing – in fact there will be more roles in the new organisation structure. This is about making the structure more efficient, and make us better able to deliver, by reorganising and redefining our roles and teams. • New roles will be advertised internally and anybody is welcome to apply for them. However, some roles will be ‘ringfenced’ initially for those who are facing a substantial change to their position at GEL. Our people are critical to our success § Whether a team member has been instrumental in delivering the 100 K Genomes Project, or whether they have joined us more recently to deliver a service for one of our partners, everybody’s contribution is vital. And this doesn’t change. § We appreciate that we are enormously fortunate to have some of the world’s leading talent in science and technology working here at GEL. § It is an absolute priority for us to look after our people. Change is tough, and the new structure will look very different - but we are committed to doing our best for everyone, and supporting those who are facing substantial change, as well as those who continue to contribute in their existing roles. 4
Genomics England An overview of the model 5
A tribe is a group of people working on a big shared goal. The tribe is responsible for delivering one or more services. The tribes align to our strategic goals. A service helps users (internal or external) achieve something. A service is delivered by squads, teams and a service core team (that take action to deliver a service, manage the operations of a service, or generally ensure things are working). Every service is led by a service owner who makes sure that products and supporting actions are ‘joined up’ in how the user experiences them. Directorate A squad scopes, builds and supports product. It is an autonomous, multidisciplinary group of up to 12 people, led by a product manager. Chapter The tribes, services, squads and teams are filled with people from different chapters who share a common skill (e. g. , software engineering, bioinformatics engineering, product management). A group of chapters report into directorates (e. g. , technology). Tribe Service Squad Team Genomics England Service Squad Team A team supports the delivery of an internal or external service. Some teams are single discipline but they often combine complementary skill sets to serve multiple squads or the entire organisation. Teams can be any size.
