Genital Warts Caused by the Human papilloma virus
Genital Warts • Caused by the Human papilloma virus (HPV) • Soft growths on the skin and mucus membranes of the genitals (resembling warts) • Found on the penis, vulva, urethra, vagina, cervix, mouth and around the anus. If on cervix they cannot be seen, thus must be detected by a pap smear • Treated and removed the same way regular warts are. Cryosurgery, Electro cauterization, Laser therapy and surgical excision • Partners must continue receiving treatment until warts are no longer present • If untreated can lead to cancer • Once infected always contagious (Treatable not Curable) • May not see warts from 6 weeks to 6 months after infected by HPV • There is an inoculation that prevents most forms of HPV.
Gonorrhea • Caused by the bacteria Neisseria gonorrhoeae • Found in eyes, urethra, in women: found in reproductive tract (fallopian tubes, uterus, and cervix) • Pus discharge, burning when urinating, soreness where infected, if the infection spreads to the bloodstream, fever, rash, and arthritis-like symptoms may occur • Appears 2 - 5 days after infection, may take up to 30 days for males • Treatment: Antibiotics • Curable with no immunity
Chlamydia • Caused by the bacteria Chlamydia trachomatis • Burning sensation during urination, discharge from the penis or rectum, testicular tenderness or pain, rectal discharge or pain, Symptoms of PIDs, liver inflammation, vaginal discharge • Appears 1 -3 weeks after infection • Some are asymptomatic, but can spread the bacteria to others • Treatment antibiotics • Untreated infection can lead to several complications, to include: PIDs and sterility
Herpes • Caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV) • Herpes Simplex 1: cold sores (fever blisters) on the lips and in the mouth • Herpes Simplex 2: (Sores - Blisters) on the genitals, buttocks, thighs, or abdomen • Most people have multiple outbreaks each year. • Appears 2 weeks after exposure or asymptomatic • No cure, keep immune system strong – Weaken system means more outbreaks, suppressive antiviral therapy to include creams to increase healing time
Syphilis • Caused by bacteria - Treponema pallidum • Primary Stage: Chancre (sores), Secondary Stage: Rash, Latent: Asymptomatic, Tertiary: Neurological, or Cardiac symptoms • Curable through Treatment: Antibiotics • Appears 3 to 90 days after exposure
