What is Genetics? Genetics is the scientific study of heredity and heredity is the passing of traits from parents to offspring. Your eye color, hair type, height… What forms the genetic code? DNA contains the genetic information for cells to make proteins. Proteins determine a variety of traits, from hair color to an organisms ability to digest food.

Structure DNA Parents pass traits to their offspring through chromosomes. Chromosomes are composed mostly of proteins and DNA and are located in a cell’s nucleus. DNA is made of nitrogen bases which are molecules that contain nitrogen and other elements. DNA has four kinds of nitrogen bases: 1. Adenine 2. Thymine 3. Guanine 4. Cytosine Written in capital letters: A, T, G and C to represent the DNA bases.

Chromosomes, Genes and DNA Project: Create a double helix 3 D Model that represents a section of DNA. The model needs to properly represent a DNA strand with proper base labels and combinations. The model needs to have a representation of the following bases: 1. Adenine 2. Cytosine 3. Guanine 4. Thymine Represented by different colors and parts as well as a clear label or key.

DNA project The DNA model needs to be accompany by a report: 1 st page: Name, Date, Per, Teacher name and your project name: DNA 2 nd page: Report. 5 paragraph report on DNA Intro: what is DNA? Body: Discovery, Importance, role in Genetics Conclusion: conclude the report. Each paragraph needs five sentences. May be hand written. DUE DATE: Monday May 16, 2016. Each person will present their models. Materials may be recyclables, store bought or hand made.
