Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) By: Josiah Rosario
What Are GMOs? Genetically modified organisms that scientists use to “better” certain products. This has been going on for years in the laboratories with scientists playing different roles throughout the process. The process is basically removing genes and replacing them with or even creating their own to often make products last longer or to add vitamins. Planting seeds are often chipped by scientists to study its DNA and choose which chemical may be suitable.
Effects on Human Body People wonder why they have allergic reactions or even cancers from eating certain foods. One of the effects causing this are pesticides, which are sprayed on the growing products. From Problems with Pesticides, Rachel Carson explains the human exposure to pesticides “is linked to health problems for example, pesticides being on fruits and vegetables can cause a wide range of health hazards from headaches and systemic poisoning to chronic impacts such as cancer and reproductive harm. ” Little do we know we can or may have already became in contact with pesticides.
Further Explanation The FDA keeps secrets from us consumers as in the right to know what we are actually consuming. They label the nutrition facts but fail to mention the fact that the products were Genetically Modified. According to Genetically Altered Foods and Your Health, Ken Roseboro says that the FDA policy requires no labeling at all. The FDA believes that if they put labels on the genetically modified products, it will act as a “skull and crossbone” and scare away consumers.
Solutions Ban GMO Farming movement: have a different strategy of farming instead such as ecological-farming. Sustainable soil is used so no chemical fertilizer nor pesticides is necessary. This method is a safer way of farming and I want consumers to be aware of the increase of safety in human consumption. Raise GMO Awareness: To add labelling to genetically modified products so we can choose and consumer smarter especially for people who have severe health issues. We as consumers have the right to know what we are purchasing and what is actually going into our bodies. By raising this awareness, I want a growth of consumers agreeing so the word can trend for our safety.
