Genesis Chapter 3 36 What does the word "subtle" mean? (Gen. 3: 1) • Genesis 3: 1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? • ANSWER - "aruwm" means cunning, clever. This can be both in a good sense or a bad sense depending on the context. Remember the serpent was created very good.
Genesis Chapter 3 37 How could the serpent be described as "very good" in Gen. 1: 31 and as "subtle" in Gen. 3: 1? – ANSWER - Our English word subtle has taken on an evil undertone because of the serpent's lie, but all creation was created "very good" (Gen. 1: 3) including the serpent which we know God made (Gen. 2: 1). • The Hebrew word "aruwm" simply means "cunning" or "clever". Obviously the serpent with its ability to speak and its quickness of perception, was placed at the top of the animal creation, but because of its lie, it was cursed anything connected with it has taken on an evil connotation. • Matthew 10: 16 Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.
Genesis Chapter 3 38 Do you feel the serpent might have been so subtle as to have reasoned that if he could get man to disobey God, he no longer would be under man's dominion? • ANSWER - There needs to be a motive for the lie. Since the serpent was cunning, clever and could also speak, it perhaps was able to so reason, especially if it had eaten of the fruit.
Genesis Chapter 3 39 Draw parallels between the serpent's reasoning; "For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened", to that of those who push drugs today. • ANSWER - With the drug trade, there is motive, appeal, and part truth • • and although the similarities are not identical, the likeness is there and well worth considering. The enticement of drugs is a thrill and enhanced awareness, which corresponds to the eyes being opened. The major cause often is pier pressure. As in the case of Adam and Eve, drug users only find out afterwards the cost of addiction. As for Adam and Eve, the addict's body is changed - physically and mentally the body hungers, craves the substance, and often the painful symptoms of withdrawal cause addicts to dedicate their lives to finding drugs to avoid that suffering. Note all three temptations to man are used by the serpent: (1) the lust of the flesh, flesh (2) lust of the eyes, eyes (3) pride of life. (See 1 John 2: 16) • 1 John 2: 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

"
Genesis Chapter 3 41 Name three effects of sin as noted in Gen. 3: 7. • ANSWER - (1) Their eyes were open to good and evil. (2) They knew they were naked. (3) They tried to cover their nakedness. • Further we see in their actions, panic, fear and mistrust in trying to run and hide from an omnipresent God. • Sin further caused a breakdown of free communication and trust.
Genesis Chapter 3 42 What do you think of the angel's approach to using leading questions rather than accusing Adam and Eve of eating of the forbidden fruit? • ANSWER - This is an excellent way to obtain a good confession. It takes time to first acknowledge, then accept, then confess, then repent of sin. • Using leading questions gives time for this necessary process, and it is wise to use this approach whenever we are accusing anyone.
Genesis Chapter 3 43 Was Adam deceived by the serpent's lie as was Eve? (cp 1 Tim. 2: 14) • 1 Timothy 2: 14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression. • ANSWER - No. In effect what Adam said: "Did you not appoint that we should be one? ” (Gen 2: 24) Then since she is involved in this transgression, must I not join her in it? • "The heart is deceitful above all things, . . . ", Jer. 17: 9 and here Adam was trying to justify his disobedience by saying that God had created the woman and given her to him and since God's woman had tempted Adam, the sin was God's fault! (Gen. 3: 12) – Genesis 3: 12 And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. – God doesn't debate Adam for Adam had broken His clear command. This provides an excellent example when it is wise to not respond, thus avoiding debating the issue.
Genesis Chapter 3 44 What does the word "enmity" mean? (See Gen. 3: 15) • • Genesis 3: 15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. ANSWER - The Hebrew word "eyd" means hostility, hatred and here its on both sides.
Genesis Chapter 3 45 Do you think Gen. 3: 15 means that God puts enmity between good and bad people? (See James 4: 4 before answering) • James 4: 4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. – ANSWER - Yes, with the reason that it helps in avoiding the bad apple syndrome. • A bad apple corrupts the apples around it, so it is better to be separated from a bad apple.

(See 1 Cor. 15: 25 -28, 5457 before answering Gen. 3: 15) – At the end of the Millennial Kingdom sin will be completely crushed when no more death. • 1 Corinthians 15: 26 The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death. • The power of sin to bring eternal death was crushed when Christ was crucified. Heb. 2: 14. – Hebrews 2: 14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he (Jesus) also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him (King Sin to reign, Rm. 5: 21) that had the power of death, that is, the devil (flesh personified which lost its power because of Jesus accomplishment bringing forgiveness of sin).

(Gen 3: 21) • ANSWER - God provided the covering, • The principle is man can't cover his own sin and if sin isn't forgiven, it leads to death. Sin was covered till Jesus came bringing forgiveness of sin. • This is a most important Bible principle which needs to be understood for it helps us understand God providing Christ to bring forgiveness of sin.

(Gen. 3: 7, 21) • ANSWER - Because of the Bible principle that without the shedding of blood, there can be no forgiveness for sin. King Sin must be put to death that it no longer can reign. – Hebrews 9: 22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.
