Genesis 5 Genealogy of Adam

1 This is the book of the generations of Adam. When God created man, he made him in the likeness of God. 2 Male and female he created them, and he blessed them and named them Man when they were created. 3 When Adam had lived 130 years, he fathered a son in his own likeness, after his image, and named him Seth. 4 The days of Adam after he fathered Seth were 800 years; and he had other sons and daughters. 5 Thus all the days that Adam lived were 930 years, and he died. (Genesis 5: 1 -5)

6 When Seth had lived 105 years, she fathered Enosh. 7 Seth lived after he fathered Enosh 807 years and had other sons and daughters. 8 Thus all the days of Seth were 912 years, and he died. 9 When Enosh had lived 90 years, he fathered Kenan. 10 Enosh lived after he fathered Kenan 815 years and had other sons and daughters. 11 Thus all the days of Enosh were 905 years, and he died. 12 When Kenan had lived 70 years, he fathered Mahalalel. 13 Kenan lived after he fathered Mahalalel 840 years and had other sons and daughters. 14 Thus all the days of Kenan were 910 years, and he died.

15 When Mahalalel had lived 65 years, he fathered Jared. 16 Mahalalel lived after he fathered Jared 830 years and had other sons and daughters. 17 Thus all the days of Mahalalel were 895 years, and he died. 18 When Jared had lived 162 years, he fathered Enoch. 19 Jared lived after he fathered Enoch 800 years and had other sons and daughters. 20 Thus all the days of Jared were 962 years, and he died. (Genesis 5: 6 -20)

21 When Enoch had lived 65 years, he fathered Methuselah. 22 Enoch walked with God after he fathered Methuselah 300 years and had other sons and daughters. 23 Thus all the days of Enoch were 365 years. 24 Enoch walked with God, and he was not, for God took him. (Genesis 5: 21 -24)

25 When Methuselah had lived 187 years, he fathered Lamech. 26 Methuselah lived after he fathered Lamech 782 years and had other sons and daughters. 27 Thus all the days of Methuselah were 969 years, and he died. (Genesis 5: 25 -27)

28 When Lamech had lived 182 years, he fathered a son 29 and called his name Noah, saying, “Out of the ground that the LORD has cursed, this one shall bring us relief from our work and from the painful toil of our hands. ” 30 Lamech lived after he fathered Noah 595 years and had other sons and daughters. 31 Thus all the days of Lamech were 777 years, and he died. 32 After Noah was 500 years old, Noah fathered Shem, Ham, and Japheth. (Genesis 5: 28 -32)

Main Point • The main point of these verses are to show the descendants of Adam • The break in Noah’s genealogical record should inform us that something will occur • Unfortunately, we do not yet know what that might be

Application Points • Names of Death and Life • Today is another genealogy • Most genealogies focus on the last name on the list • This is true of Cain's as well as Adams • We see, then, the common theme of offspring • The blessing is bestowed on all humanity • But there are still differences between the two genealogies • This Adam genealogy tells us more than Cain's • The first is the emphasis on death

Application Points • Names of Death and Life (2) • This theme is true for us • Each one of us will return to the dust from whence we came • Death is the result of human life because of sin • Yet, even with this genealogy which focuses on death there is much hope • How is that? • The answer is found in two people, Enoch and Noah • Enoch, in particular, is one of the most interesting individuals in the Scriptures

Application Points • Names of Death and Life (3) • His entire story lasts 93 words, and a mere 7 verses, yet from this we come to a conclusion • Faithfulness, and obedience, to God leads to life • Enoch, the first person to be translated into heaven • When we see Enoch, we see his story in simplicity and grandeur • Following after God leads from death into life • We find those who live for God’s glory, in obedience to Him in faith, will find life • When it comes to Christ we see the reality of where faithfulness leads • We know Christ has been raised, and we know that faith in Him leads to life and righteousness • Those who are faithful to God will have faith in Christ

Application Points • Names of Death and Life (4) • Just as Enoch walked with God, so we are called to walk in the Spirit of God • Each of us is capable because each of us has been given new life in Christ • Does this mean we can boast in ourselves? • No! For we who live in faith know that it is not our righteousness which we seek and find, but the righteousness of Christ Himself • The righteousness given causes us to boast in Christ alone

Application Points • Names of Death and Life (5) • Does this mean we can live in any lifestyle we choose? • No, instead we recognize the same as Paul, we do not abandon the Law but uphold it (Romans 3: 31) • It is not that we seek righteousness because God beats us into it, but because our God loves us, and we love our God • Love is the foundation for us in our faith • In Enoch we see an individual who encourages us along the path • Who whispers to us through the ages • “Be faithful, be faithful. Faithfulness leads to life. Faithfulness alone saves you from death. ”

Application Points • Names of Death and Life (6) • But this also leads to us a bit • How will I be remembered? • It is interesting to consider this question when we find so many names even in the Scriptures! • The majority of the names lead somewhere else…the next generation • We don’t know much about a person on the list except they had a child, they lived this long, and they died • Is this sorrowful?

Application Points • Names of Death and Life (7) • Our sorrow would be misplaced • We have in this list individuals who made their shoulders stronger for the next generation • Did everyone believe? It’s clear they didn’t • Not all the sons and daughters had faith, but it does seem that with at least this line there were those who continued in faithfulness • Thus another encouragement that cannot be overstated • Make your shoulders strong for the next generation! • Keep being faithful • Be examples of how to live for God, love God, and walk in obedience with God in faith

Application Points • Names of Death and Life (8) • Genealogies remind us of this humble fact…they all have an end • Prior to your offspring you were that end • Genealogies remind us that each person on the list comes to an end • Each person is another person in a long chain • Genealogies also remind us that each member on the list is important • You are important for God’s plan • Why did God put you here? Because God is most glorified exactly where you are • If God would have been more glorified with you elsewhere, He would have placed you there

Application Points • Names of Death and Life (9) • But as it is, God has a purpose for His glory and He does not make mistakes • These genealogies can be exhausting, but they remind us a great deal of what we need to be reminded of • God is good, He is great, and He leads us • That we have responsibilities • That we are to be like Enoch • These are encouragements from today’s text • To remember that death comes, • To remember that to escape death one must seek faithfulness, • To remember that we are an important part of a much larger story than ourselves
