Genesis 2 Questions and Answers
Genesis Chapter 2 Questions & Answers 26 What is the difference between “created” and “made” in Gen. 2: 3 and does this fit the suggestion that some make as noted in the notes, Gen. 1: 7? • Genesis 2: 3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created (“bara”) and made (asah”). • Created ("bara") Gen. 1: 1 “In the beginning God created …” and used with things that are new, created from God’s spirit power and not from matter that has already been created. This is important because of Ex. 20: 11 says God made (“Asah”) speaking of the seven day creation. • Exodus 20: 11 “For in six days the LORD made (“asah”) heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: …” • “Asah” is used, therefore this speaks of our seven day creation about 6000 years ago.
Genesis Chapter 2 Questions & Answers 26 What is the difference between “created” and “made” in Gen. 2: 3 and does this fit the suggestion that some make as noted in the notes, Gen. 1: 7? – Genesis 1: 7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so. – The notes in Gen. 1: 7 say the meaning of “created” and “made” isn’t radically different. The difference is the source namely God’s power or from that already existing. The context determines how important this difference is, i. e. – Isaiah 42: 5 “Thus saith God the LORD, he that created (“bara”) the heavens, and stretched them out …” • “Bara” is used therefore this speaks of when God created the heavens and stretched out the stars as in Gen. 1: 1.
HOW WELL DO OUR DEFINITIONS OF “BARA” AND “ASAH” HOLD? • “bara” describes that new, unique, creative use of God’s power. • “asah” is linked with making things out of that already EXISTING. 1: 1 In the beginning God created“bara”the heaven and the earth. NEW 1: 7 And God made the firmament… (from EXISTING materials) 1: 11 And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding (“asah”- making) seed, and the fruit tree yielding (“asah”) …EXISTED 1: 16 And God made (asah) two great lights (Source already EXISTED) 1: 21 And God created (bara) great whales, … (unique by God’s power) 1: 25 And God made (asah) the beast of the earth … (Source EXISTED) 1: 26 And God said, Let us make (asah) man in our image… (Source = “dust of the ground” Gen. 2: 7) 1: 27 So God created (bara) man in his own image, in the image of God created (bara) he him; male and female created (bara) … (unique by God’s power given spiritual potential. ) 1: 31 And God saw every thing that he had made (asah), and, behold, it was very good… Gen. 2: 2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made (asah); and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made (basa). (talking of our 7 day creation). 2: 3 … that in it he had rested from all his work which God created (bara) and made (asah). (Our 7 day creation has both new and old. )

Genesis Chapter 2 Questions & Answers 33 How do you explain that God's command wasn't carried out on the very day they ate of the tree? (Gen 2: 17) • Genesis 2: 17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. • ANSWER - The Hebrew is "muth te muth" which is a Hebrew idiom which can be translated, "dying thou shalt die”. – (YLT) Gen 2: 17 “… in the day of thy eating of it – dying thou shalt die. ” – There also many examples in Scripture that upon repentance, God changes the original degree. • Jonah 3: 9 Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not? 10 And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.
