§ Excedrin is a combination of acetaminophen, aspirin and caffeine § Acetaminophen is used as a pain reliever and fever reducer § Aspirin reduces substances in the body that cause pain, fever and inflammation § Caffeine is a stimulant for the central nervous system. It relaxes muscle contractions in blood vessels to improve blood flow § Excedrin is used to relieve pain caused by tension headaches, migraines, muscle aches, arthritis, colds or nasal congestion.
§ Each tablet of Excedrin contains 250 mg of acetaminophen, 250 mg of aspirin and 65 mg of caffeine. § Adults and children older than 12 years old are recommended to take 2 tablets every 6 hours. § No more than 8 tablets in one day § It is recommended to drink a full glass of water with each dose § Not recommended for children under 12 years old
§ Aspirin is a Category C unless a full dose is taken during the third trimester then it is considered a Category D § Acetaminophen is commonly used during pregnancy for short-term pain relief and fever in all stages of pregnancy. It is believed to be safe during pregnancy when it is used for short durations. § Caffeine is a Category B. The FDA advises pregnant women to limit their intake of caffeine to a minimum § During the first 2 trimesters the combination of acetaminophen, aspirin and caffeine should only be given to a pregnant mother when the it is clearly needed and when the benefit outweighs the risk. § It is highly recommended that pregnant women in the 3 rd trimester avoid Excedrin because of the risk of taking the aspirin component of the drug.
Side Effects § Signs of an allergic reaction such as redness, swelling, itching, tightness in the chest or throat or trouble breathing § Signs of liver problems like dark urine, not hungry, upset stomach, lightcolored stools, or yellow skin or eyes § Signs of bleeding like throwing up blood, coughing up blood, blood in the urine, or bruises without a reason or that get bigger § Feeling confused § Dizziness or passing out § Ringing in ears § Very bad headache or if headache is not better after the first dose Interactions § Excedrin interacts with a total of 680 drugs: 103 major drug interactions, 429 moderate drug interactions and 148 minor drug interactions § Common medications: § Adderall § Advil § Aspirin § Benadryl § Fish oil § Ibuprofen § Motrin § Tramadol § Tylenol
