What does ELSA stand for? • The world’s largest independent law students’ association • More than 42, 000 ELSA Members • More than 300 universities in Europe covered by ELSA • 43 ELSA National Groups, 40 members and 3 observers • 1 ELSA International

History of ELSA • Founded on 4 th of May 1981 in Vienna – 5 Founders from 4 countries: • Hungary, Poland, Germany, Austria • Working for the same vision on three levels: 1. Local 2. National 3. International • ELSA will celebrate its 35 th Anniversary during the Spring International Council Meeting to be held in Malta in March 2016.

International Focus Programme • International Focus Programme (IFP) seeks to provide a specific theme for the whole ELSA, to set a common goal, for all its members to work towards • theme reflects a ‘hot legal topic’ in Europe and the world, thereby enabling ELSA to have an impact on law students, society and the international community • IFP topic: Media Law – 1 st of August 2013 - 31 st of July 2016 • ELSA is currently preparing for new topic

Training • Two types: 1. Soft Skills Training: personal and professional development 2. Officers’ Training: ELSA knowledge • International Trainers’ Pool Trainers from the whole Network for the whole Network. All NGs and LGs can submit the Pre-Training Questionnaire. • Training Newsletter Online International Magazine to promote non-formal education & training projects. Articles from the IB, the ITP Trainers and participants of training sessions and events.

The European Human Rights Moot Court Competition (4 th Edition) • simulation of the European Court of Human Rights concerning the violation of the European Convention on Human Rights • to develop legal skills and raise awareness among law students about human rights • Final Oral Round held in Strasbourg with the pleadings in the European Court of Human Rights • “The Council of Europe Award” – Traineeships at the European Court of Human Rights for the winning team of the Competition • in Cooperation with the Council of Europe http: //humanrightsmoot. elsa. org

The ELSA Moot Court Competition on WTO Law (14 th Edition) • simulated hearing of the World Trade Organization dispute settlement system • the world’s leading global competition on international trade law • supported by the World Trade Organization • Patron of the Competition: Director General of the WTO • 5 Regional Rounds all around the world: 2 European Rounds, Asia-Pacific, All American, Africa • Final Oral Round in Geneva, Switzerland - in the WTO headquaters itself http: //elsamootcourt. elsa. org

Moot Court Competitions –how to participate • teams consisting of 2 -4 students enrolled in the University • teams may have a team coach or academic advisor • EMC 2 registration fee (250 EUR) • EHRMCC without registration fee • teams prepare memorials (written submissions) for both parties of the dispute • second stage of the Moot Court is the oral pleading part • registration form on the respective website of the Competition • Hear from the experience: – video
