Key barriers to gender equality • Time constraints limit women’s opportunities to improve their education, productivity and income level, and to participate in public events • Household income constraints, restricted ownership, access to capital limits opportunities to set up income-generation activities ► Less income for educating children, purchasing food, fuel and medicine • Lack of access to modern, affordable energy services and infrastructure limits development opportunities of poor rural households ► Forces minimal energy use and reliance on traditional fuels (negative impact esp. on women’s workload, health and safety) ► Energy-poverty and poor-quality kerosene lighting limit income-generating opportunities (esp. women with home-based, energy-intensive activities) ►Can CDM help to address these barriers? 13. 6. 2011, CDM & Gender

Take-home message for CDM actors The current CDM structure offers various entry points for incorporating gender considerations into CDM project activities: – Host and investor countries can introduce gender considerations into their national CDM approval criteria; – Carbon credit buyers can include gender perspectives in their due diligence process and procurement strategies; – Project developers can consider gender aspects into project design and implementation and carry out a participatory and balanced stakeholder process; and – Global observers can use the global stakeholder process to highlight gender perspectives of individual CDM projects. The full realisation of CDM’s gender-positive potential thus depends on the awareness, willingness and commitment of the parties involved 13. 6. 2011, CDM & Gender
