What is GEMx? ● ● ● In short - GEMx is a platform that links 50+ universities from across the world to facilitate exchanges for students in the health professions This serves as a centralized hub to find apply for clinical electives at universities in other countries It is under the parent organization of the ECFMG (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates)
How do I sign up for an account? ● https: //www. gemxelectives. org/
Where can I go? ● ● List of partner institutions Once you make a GEMx account - you will be able to access the list of specific rotations/their availability start your application ○ Here is a list of all institutions and their electives in an Excel sheet ■ (click the + button to the left of an individual institution to view the available electives) ■ FYI - it’s much easier to see these on the site once you make an account, but since we’re all Type A medical students we wanted to share the info ASAP
When can I go? ● ● ● Whenever you want to! (kinda) Availability depends on individual institutions Most MS 4’s recommend going in February or April (before/after Gateway) ○ Check with speciality-specific advisor if you’d like to go closer to interview season
How do I apply/what is required to apply? ● ● Once verified by SKMC, use the “Student Login” at the top right of GEMx. Electives. org ○ You will be prompted to selection an institution, elective(s), and dates ○ ○ ○ ○ Copy of current passport CV Letter of Motivation (by student) Letter of Recommendation Transcript Photograph Vaccination/medical info (varies by location) Level of language proficiency (varies by location) Application materials vary by institution, however most will require:
Do these count as electives? ● It is ultimately up to individual departments, but usually yes (must be 4+ weeks) ○ ○ ● Do not count for Sub-I’s, ER, Senior Medicine, etc. Most advisors suggest getting Rec Letters from US Institutions for residency (ask specialty specific advisor) Contacts for departments: ○ ○ ○ Family Medicine - Laura. How do I pay for this? ● ● Foerderer Award through Jefferson - can cover up to 70% of cost Apply through links above - handled through International Affairs ● “Students interested in Spring Travel (November 1 -May 30 of the current academic year) should apply by the October deadline. Students interested in Summer Travel (May 31 -August 31 of the current academic year) should apply by the January deadline. ”
