GEC+ Cape Town The GEC+ Cape Town is jointly presented in collaboration with UCT GSB, Accelerate Cape Town and the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation. This event brings together global experts in entrepreneurial research, ecosystem development and socio-economic growth. Global Entrepreneurship Research Network (GERN) The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation, a member of GERN, is hosting the GERN Annual General Meeting as part of the GEC+ Cape Town which will gather GERN members from overseas.

Cape Town and Understanding Ecosystems For Entrepreneurs Understanding Ecosystems Jonathan Ortmans will moderate a discussion among experts in developing smarter playbooks in nurturing healthier ecosystem for entrepreneurs. This panel looks at Cape Town’s contribution to the global entrepreneurship ecosystem. The panel will also examine and explore local conditions that contributes towards collaborative capital for ecosystem growth and development Jonathan Ortmans is joined by Victor Hwang (Kauffman Foundation) Tim Harris (WESGRO) and Chris Schroeder (GEN Senior Advisor and author of Start Up Rising) in a discussion about creating a conducive environment to accelerate the development of an inclusive entrepreneurship ecosystem. Against a backdrop of the 2017 Startup Genome Ecosystem Rankings and the Global Entrepreneurship Index there are many positives to celebrate, but equally many opportunities to strengthen Cape Town’s position as a robust and sustainable entrepreneurship ecosystem.

Entrepreneurial Mindset Research Agenda Phil Auerswald, Executive Director of GERN will guide a discussion led by Prof Kelly Shaver, Fredell Jacobs and Immanuel Commarmond that unpacks the core methodology behind the construction of an entrepreneurial mindset measurement instrument Entrepreneurial mindset research under the stewardship of GERN is a collaboration between the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation and Mindcette to design and construct a universal tool to measure entrepreneurial mindset. The panel will share the aim of the research and some insights into the process so far as well as future plans to involve more GERN members.

Impact Investing Brought to you by Greater Impact An esteemed panel of Impact Investing practitioners share their experience from the field. Paul Malherbe CEO of AMSCO South Africa and Greater Impact opens this session with an overview of how they create value in this sector. He is joined by Karen Wilson (OECD) , Tim Harris (WESGRO) Max Pichulik (Impact Amplifier) and Sawa Nakagawa (E 2) who will share their insights and experience from the field.

Entrepreneurial Mindset in Action Brought to you by Bertha Centre for Social Innovation & Entrepreneurship Prof Francios Bonnici leads this panel and share experience from the field in developing, implementing and operating entrepreneurship capacity development programmes The Bertha Centre for Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship serves as a prime example of creating collaborative capital for entrepreneurship development. This panel will share their insights, key learning and advice on how to create ecosystem partnerships that produce results.

Entrepreneurial Mindset in Action Brought to you by South African Angel Investor Network Chris Campbell shares his experience about starting an organised movement to build a more active and accessible angel investor network in South Africa An international panel contributes to this session looking at the fundamentals of building and strengthening angel investment in a region. A practical view about what works and what pitfalls to avoid as practitioners share their experience from the field. A comprehensive overview of what the future might look like for angel investing in South Africa

The panel will discuss the key findings from the report and share their views on what South Africa should focus on to improve our overall performance

South Africa City Ecosystem Report A tale of Two Cities Cape Town and Johannesburg are featured in this session as it takes its position in the global rankings of city ecosystems becoming the first two African cities to be included in Global Startup Ecosystem Ranking This collaboration between the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation and Simodisa aims to deliver deeper insights into South Africa’s most prolific startup ecosystems. The panel will share highlights from the ranking and unpack the key issues that needs attention to make our cities more conducive for supporting startup ecosystems.

City of Cape Town Enterprise Development Unit The Enterprise Development Unit of the City of Cape Town share their strategy for entrepreneurship ecosystem development This session present an opportunity for local participants to learn first hand what programmes are currently active in support of local small and growing businesses. Community engagement and inclusive growth underlines the city’s mission and here they will share experiences from the field

Entrepreneurial Mindset in Action Awethu Experience from the field The Awethu Project has grown from a R 60 k startup to a multi-million rand entrepreneurship capacity development initiative which earned them global acclaim. This session presents lessons from their journey, highlights and the experience of dealing with South African entrepreneurs from all walks of life.
