GCSE English Literature • The English Literature GCSE will encourage pupils to read a wide range of classic literature fluently with the assessment of: • A Shakespeare play – ‘Macbeth’ • A 19 th century novel - ‘The Sign of Four’ – Arthur Conan Doyle. • British fiction or drama from 1914 onwards • ‘DNA’ – Dennis Kelly • A selection of poetry since 1789 , ‘Love and Relationships’ – AQA • Unseen poetry • No foundation or higher The quality of writing in the response to texts will be assessed. • No coursework 23/02/2021 2

English Literature Paper 1 How it's assessed (No books are allowed in the exam) • written exam: 1 hour 45 minutes • 64 marks • 40% of GCSE Questions: Section A Shakespeare: pupils will answer one question. They will be required to write in detail about an extract from ‘Macbeth’ the play and then to write about the play as a whole. Section B The 19 th-century novel: pupils will answer one question. They will be required to write in detail about an extract from ‘Sign of Four’ and then to write about the novel as a whole. 23/02/2021 3

English Literature Paper 2 How it's assessed (No books allowed in exam) • written exam: 2 hours 15 minutes • 96 marks • 60% of GCSE Questions Section A Modern texts: pupils will answer one essay question from a choice of two on ‘DNA’. Section B Poetry: pupils will answer one comparative question on one named poem printed on the paper and one other poem from ‘Love and Relationships’. Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar. • This must be accurate for Grade 4 and above. • Remind your child to build five minutes into their time to check their writing. • Support them in practising their core skills. 23/02/2021 9

How to help your child revise. QUIZ THEM. MAKE SURE THEY ARE QUIZZING THEMSELVES. Every pupil has quotations for all the texts studied and they are quizzed regularly on these at school. Please test them at home. Texts studied are: Macbeth, Sign of Four, Anthology Poetry and DNA. • Also test them on themes and characters within the set texts. • Which poems can be compared together and how. • Most importantly, make sure they are doing their homework. 23/02/2021 10
