Brace yourselves for the next sentence, because you may find it distressing. On a recent British Airways flight to Fuerteventura from the UK not all of the passengers were able to stuff their faces with food. Yes, utterly horrifying, but we mustn’t shy away from difficult subjects. The same fate reportedly befell some poor souls on a flight back from Innsbruck. On both occasions the airline had stocked insufficient sandwiches. “It’s bad enough for us adults who were hungry, tired and miserable, ” complained one woman about the Fuerteventura flight, “but our 11 -year-old daughter was in tears because she was so hungry. ” All that was on offer was “a couple of packets of biscuits and nuts”, she said, adding: “How do you put hundreds of people in the air and then deliberately deny them food and drink for four hours-plus? ” Well, hasn’t that put Syria’s problems into perspective? No one wants a child to be upset, but I’d ask a different question. Why the hell can’t people cope for a few hours any more without eating? Why, on a shortish flight, can’t they just bloody wait? Must they graze like goats through every experience, chowing and gulping on trains and planes, in theatres and cinemas — even while doing their supermarket shop? Really, mate, you need to chomp on that triangular sandwich you pulled off the shelf right now…? It couldn’t wait ten chuffing minutes until you got to your car?
