WALL-E Wireless Appliance Linking Local Environments l We named our device WALL-E to inform the consumer that our device is wireless and can detect VOC’s in multiple environments
VO – what? VOCs, volatile organic compounds, are gasses emitted from certain solids and liquids. They range in levels of harmfulness, from not-so harmful to deadly. Symptoms include conjunctival irritation, nose and throat discomfort, headache, allergic skin reaction, nausea, fatigue, and dizziness. Some VOCs may even cause cancer.
Water vs. Air Outdoor vs. Indoor l l We decided on an Indoor air detector. Concentrations of many VOCs are consistently higher indoors (up to ten times higher) than outdoors We chose water over air because of its cost effectiveness and the possibility to use a electronic signal from the sensor. VOC concentrations in the house depend on several factors including the following: u Amount of VOCs in a product u Rate the VOCs are released u Ventilation of the area
Applications of WALL-E A shadow box style wall hanging with abstract decorative wires in the front of the box, and the circuitry in the back of the box. We will have separate wireless detectors that can be moved from room to room sending the signals to the WALL -E thus alerting the consumer by lighting up the box and sending out a sound.
Prototype Design
What does it mean? l While we focus our attention on bettering the environment, we have come to realize that this is impossible without technology. Technology is an underlying principle that has always ruled the world, and will continue to do so. Our piece brings this underlying principle to the forefront.
Wireless Components Arduino : Physical computing platform Xbee : Wireless chipset Portable Device Plexiglas Frame VOCs Sensor LEDs Electric signal Arduino Electric signal Xbee Wireless signal Xbee
Materials and Costs VOCs Sensor: $48 Arduino (programmable): $65 Xbee (wireless): $111 Other (LEDs, battery, …): $42 Total: $266 Total with Taxes: $283 Design (projected): $300 Total: $583
Why it WILL sell Our product will appeal to every consumer because it includes certain important aspects and features such as… Health • It detects volatile organic compounds in the area surrounding the device, alerting the owner of the poisonous chemicals ü Wireless • This component allows the user to place another sensor in a different area, allowing the consumer to detect VOCs in more than one room ü Art • Along with the fact that this device can help in reducing the VOCs in an area, the design of WALL-E could also serve as an abstract piece of art ü
