GÉANT Supporting Global Science Roberto Sabatino DANTE connect • communicate • collaborate

What is GÉANT? § High-bandwidth, high-performance pan-European communications infrastructure serving Europe’s research and education community § Connects 40 million users in over 8, 000 institutions across 40 countries § Co-funded by Europe’s NRENs and the European Commission (EC) connect • communicate • collaborate

About GÉANT: Backbone Network 12, 000 km of dark fibre 500 Gbps DWDM 100 Gbps IP 24 x 7 NOC 99. 999% IP availability connect • communicate • collaborate

Globally: 65 countries outside Europe connect • communicate • collaborate

Funding GEANT is co-funded by EC, through FP 5, 6, 7… projects at ~50% Other ~50% funded by NRENs, through a Cost Sharing mechanism covering (aka subscription): IP access Set of predefined services additional fees for specific service instances, such as 10 Gbps circuits Services within subscription paid up front by NRENs connect • communicate • collaborate

GÉANT Services Delivered to end users through NRENs Connectivity IP, up to 100 Gbps access VPNs Circuit services: 1 -10 -100 Gbps Bandwidth On Demand Performance Monitoring AAI: edu. GAIN Cloud Services connect • communicate • collaborate

International service delivery chain Impressive set of services - BUT: Researcher receives from campus IT service catalogue A Campus IT receives from NREN service catalogue B – NREN receives from GEANT service catalogue C Service catalogues differ! What’s more, NREN service catalogues differ, as do Campus Service catalogues NREN business models differ connect • communicate • collaborate

Challenges for the users Imagine two collaborators in two different countries Which services are available to them end to end ? What are the business models along the delivery chain ? – Who pays what to whom? Now imagine having 10 users in 10 countries… How do users work their way through the labyrinth ? connect • communicate • collaborate

GEANT user liaison function Co-ordination functions towards the “users”: international organisations: real and virtual International projects or collaborations Discuss and understand user requirements Co-ordinate the formulation of solutions for the user – Technical, organisational, financial Be “the voice of the customer/user” within GÉANT Works in tight co-operation with “lead NREN” connect • communicate • collaborate

How do we do it ? Extensive dialogues with representative of users to understand “how they work” and “what do they need to do” As opposed to “what do they need ? ” Translate into networking requirements Co-ordinate discussion with all relevant stakeholders, above all each NREN Involve Subject Matter Experts (e. g. AAI, …) Formulate information on architectures, services needed, financial information, operational models connect • communicate • collaborate

Summary GEANT and NRENs offer an impressive set of services Difficult for users to understand which services they can/should use and under which conditions if they are left on their own GEANT user liaison function: Gives users the information they need Formulates a solution for their needs “voice of user” within GEANT Makes it happen connect • communicate • collaborate

Food for thought (for panel discussion) How useful is it to users to avail of such co-ordination function ? Did you even know it existed before today ? Or did you always perceive networking as “a given” or…. . Is a different type or additional support needed ? What could it be ? Would you like to see EGI and GEANT working together on user liaison, and how ? connect • communicate • collaborate
