HOW GANGS STARTED? Most gangs in Chicago started out as ethnic groups in order for them to protect themselves from others and outsiders. Not all gangs started out selling drugs some gangs like the Blackstone Nation helped the community by feeding the poor. When the drugs started getting popular is when gangs seen the profit of selling drugs. When this started every gang wanted to apart of it. That is when the violence started happening. In the community I live in there is two major gangs the Two Six and the Latin Kings. Their both rivals and are both looking for the same thing money, power, respect. According to chicagogangs. org, the Two-Six “started out as a baseball team known as Two Sixers because they were from 26 th street. ” The Two Six started selling drugs the Latin Kings got mad and started harassing the Two Six gang. Then fights would break out and let to both gangs looking for new recruits. This is how the gangs in our community started fighting but now its affecting everyone living here.

WHAT IS THE ISSUE? The issue in our community is that we face gang violence in a daily basis. We see gang members being killed and even innocent people. You got to learn your sets of rules if you want to live in Chicago with out any problems with the gangs. People got to know what colors they cant where and what gang is in the neighborhoods you go to. In Chicago homicides have increased by 24. 7% since last year, totaling to 2, 008 shooting incidents in the 2012 year ( Fact Sheet on Guns and Domestic Violence, 2012). There isn’t as much police enforcement in Chicago to stop all these homicides and crimes. There are only 12, 000 cops and 100, 000 gang members. This leads to there being an issue in Chicago.

HOW IT AFFECTS THE COMMUNITY • it makes the community unsafe for the people living their. • Children are not going to be able to go outside as they please do to the gang violence happening. • All the robberies, graffiti, drug selling, fights, and shootings. • It makes the city look bad foreigners.

PREVENTION • We can talk to the youth and cause awareness. • Have older gang members talk to the youth about the life of a gang member. • Open up more programs like cease fire. • Open up more after school programs to keep some teens out of the streets.
