Fact file 2. 1. Mahatma Gandhi was one of the most famous freedom fighters in the history of mankind. He led India in its struggle for freedom against the British rule. Mahatma Gandhi was born as Mohandas Gandhi on October 2 nd 1869 in Gujarat. , India. When he grew up, Gandhi travelled to London to study law. He accepted a job in South Africa. During a train journey in South Africa, on request of a white passenger, Gandhi was thrown out of the 3. train even though he had a first class ticket. He then decided he would never tolerate racial discrimination at the hands of white people again. Gandhi returned to India and became very involved in the India’s freedom struggle against British 4. rulers. He always followed non-violent methods of protests like fasts and marches. His most famous march was the ‘Salt march’ to protest against British people for making a simple thing like ‘salt’ expensive. Gandhi supported ‘cottage industries’ which meant small groups of people working from home 5. making their own clothes. He felt it was unfair of British Government to buy raw cotton at low prices from Indian farmers then manufactured cotton clothes in their factories and then to sell them back to Indians at very high prices. 6. Mahatma Gandhi later launched the ‘Quit India movement’ against the British. Finally, India received independence on 15 th August 1947. He is dearly known by all Indians as ”Father of the nation. “
