Games for number sense: - collecting games - target games - track games and more! Surrey Plus Early years maths working group 2019
Broadmere We created a new take on hopscotch. We rolled a dice and then the children used a space hopper to jump along that number in hoops. Lots of giggles were had whilst learning to count and stopping at the ‘stop number’.
Broadmere The children used dice to roll a number. They would then show me the number using their fingers before drawing in on the chalkboard with a tally. They are really getting a good sense of their numbers.
Broadmere Outside the children enjoyed using compare bears to colour sort. The children enjoyed guessing how many of each colour they had and then checking to see who was right. Rahisa Zaheed

Year R Maths Game at Oakwood Infant School We used our circular rug as a template for our maths track game. I drew a track around the rug with chalk and asked the children to throw the numbered dice to determine how many jumps they will have to make. During the game the children were exposed to a variety of maths language and vocabulary. For example: “Let’s see if I will have a bigger number!” “How many more jumps would you have to make to pass xxxx? ” “How many jumps do you need to get to the end? ” “Who came first? ” Etc One of the girls then started writing numerals in order on the track. The others decided to go and fetch things in the classroom to match the number. They had to display estimation skills, choosing items we will have enough of. A lot of checking and counting, teamwork, touch counting, more and less, one more, one less, etc. We had a lot of fun playing with numbers! Inez Horn and Becky Munday
Maths in Rabbit Class Onslow Infants We introduced a 'voting station' which we were both really enthusiastic to present to the children. One day we set out two books, only to find that one of the children had come along and sorted all the bricks into colour! This showed us that they were still at the sorting stage, rather than numerosity! We introduced more recording into our classroom, its been good to see the different ways in which the children will record and how they are comparing their scores.
Giant snakes and ladders We also have done subitising to 6. We used our mat which has 30 carpet spaces and created a giant snakes and ladders game. We used masking tape for the ladder and a drawing for a snake and a giant dice. The whole class sat around the carpet, engaged in the two children who were rolling the dice and calling out the numbers. This of course allowed them to become experienced in one more and one less.

Long Ditton Melanie Dawes Funky Fingers game first throw dice and build tower with correct number of cubes using the tweezers. Once they have completed this activity they played a game in pairs. Throwing the dice and adding cubes, counting the total cubes. First to 10 and then 20 is the winner. Estimation activity 2 water bottles of different sizes. The children estimate which holds more and which holds less. They then estimate how many cups of water is held in each bottle. They then check by filling the cups and chalking a mark for each cup filled and then counting the total.

Lego boats : how many coins will they hold?
Throwing balls in a bucket Playing how many people on the bus, more getting on and some getting off.
Bowling We took it in turns to play bowling. We counted how many ducks we knocked over and recorded our numbers. We added them together to see who had the most. We found out that M knocked over 3 and 4 which made the same total as JT's 2 and 5.
