GAME SENSE APPROACH
WHAT IS GAME SENSE APPROACH? GAME SENSE IS WIDELY KNOWN AS TEACHING GAMES FOR UNDERSTANDING (TGFU). IT IS AN ENQUIRY BASED APPROACH TO LEARNING WHERE STUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO ASK QUESTIONS. GAME SENSE IS A STUDENT CENTRED APPROACH TO TEACHING AND ASSISTS STUDENTS IN DEVELOPING AN UNDERSTANDING OF A GAME WITHIN CONTEXT WHILST DEVELOPING THEIR SKILLS.
WHY GAME SENSE APPROACH? THERE IS FOCUS ON BOTH SKILLS AND LEARNING THE GAMES ARE MODIFIED TO ASSIST STUDENTS IN DEVELOPING THEIR UNDERSTANDING, SKILLS IN DECISION MAKING AND SPORTING SKILLS. MODIFICATIONS ARE MADE TO ASSIST STUDENTS IN DEVELOPING THEIR UNDERSTANDING OF ALL ASPECTS IN THE CHOSEN GAME. HELPS DEVELOP STUDENTS PROBLEM SOLVING SKILLS, COMMUNICATION SKILLS AND SELF ABILITY TO COLLABORATE. STUDENTS ARE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE
WHY GAME SENSE APPROACH? GAME SENSE WILL ASSIST STUDENTS IN DEVELOPING THEIR ABILITY IN THE TWELVE FUNDAMENTAL MOVEMENT SKILLS (FMS) THROUGH THE USE OF MODIFIED GAMES. THE TWELVE FUNDAMENTAL SKILLS ARE: STATIC BALANCE. SPRINT RUN. VERTICAL JUMP SIDE GALLOP CATCH KICK HOP SKIP TWO HAND STRIKE OVERARM THROW THE DODGE
HOW DO WE IMPLEMENT GAME SENSE APPROACH INTO THE YEAR FIVE PDHPE CLASS? STUDENTS WILL ENGAGE IN MODIFIED GAMES THAT WILL ASSIST IN DEVELOPING THEIR KNOWLEDGE, UNDERSTANDING AND SKILLS FOR PHYSICAL EDUCATION. GAMES WILL BE MODIFIED TO SUIT STUDENTS ABILITIES WHILST KEEPING STUDENTS ENGAGED. STUDENTS WILL THEN REFLECT ON THE LESSON AND WHAT THEY LEARNT, THIS WILL BE SHOWN THROUGH CLASSROOM DISCUSSION.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR YEAR FIVE STUDENTS? STUDENTS WILL LEARN TO: - COLLABORATE AND WORK AS A TEAM - ENGAGE IN DISCUSSION WITH PEERS AND EDUCATORS - INQUIRE (INQUIRY BASED LEARNING) - DEVELOP THEIR SKILLS IN PE - PLAY THE GAME - PLAY SPORT IN AN INCLUSIVE CLASS ENVIRONMENT - HAVE FUN IN PE CLASS STUDENTS KNOWLEDGE IS IMPORTANT AND WE, AS EDUCATORS, URGE STUDENTS TO DISCUSS THEIR KNOWLEDGE WITH THE CLASS.
BOARD OF STUDIES SKILLS OUTCOMES STUDENTS WILL REACH THROUGH THE USE OF GAME SENSE APPROACH. BOARD OF STUDIES, NSW. (2007) COS 3. 3 - COMMUNICATES CONFIDENTLY IN A VARIETY OF SITUATIONS. INS 3. 3 - ACTS IN WAYS THAT ENHANCE THE CONTRIBUTION OF SELF AND OTHERS IN A RANGE OF COOPERATIVE SITUATIONS. MOS 3. 4 - REFINES AND APPLIES MOVEMENT SKILLS CREATIVELY TO A VARIETY OF CHALLENGING SITUATIONS. PSS 3. 5 - SUGGESTS, CONSIDERS AND SELECTS APPROPRIATE ALTERNATIVES WHEN RESOLVING PROBLEMS. GSS 3. 8 - APPLIES MOVEMENT SKILLS IN GAMES AND SPORTS THAT REQUIRE COMMUNICATION, COOPERATION, DECISION MAKING AND OBSERVATION OF RULES.
