Aims and Objectives Aims Students to be aware of the definition of gambling and how these can impact themselves and others. Students will be able to see the connection between gaming and gambling Objectives • Students will define the meaning of gambling and the impact on themselves and others. • Students will self-assess their attitudes towards gambling. • Students will be able to discuss why people gamble. • Students will recognise social and other gaming, loot boxes” and “skins”. • • Students will locate how to find help. Students will describe learning and how they might respond to this.
What is gambling? It’s not just casinos It's not just casinos and gambling shops, betting offices etc. Gambling is anything where you can lose something of value, such as: • Money • Phone • Credit card • House • Car I bet you can't name all the different types of gambling or betting? I know I'll win….
Types of gambling. Can you think of any others? Here's a few: • Cards – Blackjack, Poker etc. • Dice - Craps, 21 etc. • Sport - Football, horse racing etc. • Lottery and Scratch cards • Bingo • Slot machines • Fighting – Boxing, cage fighting, animals etc. • Skin betting - gaming • Loot boxes - gaming • Online - any of the above can be done online.

Real Life gambling stories Bet on anything? ? Dead Lucky. A 91 -year-old from Devon placed £ 500 at 6 -to-1 odds that he would be dead by the end of the year. He lived and William Hill pocketed the £ 500. Booby Prize Brian Zembic, a Canadian, accepted a $100, 000 bet to get and live with breast implants for a year. He still has them. The end is nigh Londoner Matthew Dumbrell took 1, 000 to 1 odds that the world would end before the end of the year. It didn’t!!
“Chasing the bet” • People who think they can beat the system or the bookies are living in denial • When they're losing, others think their luck will change soon and they just need a few more bets and they'll win back all their losses. This is called, "chasing the bet". And…… Betting places love these people.
Who loves gambling / betting? 1) The government loves gamblers It takes nearly £ 3, 000, 000 (£ 3 billion) a year from betting taxes. 2) The media loves gamblers (TV, newspapers etc. ) It takes nearly £ 1, 400, 000 (£ 1. 4 billion) a year from advertising. 3) The Premier league loves gamblers It takes nearly £ 47, 000 (£ 47 million) a year from shirt sponsorships.
Attitudes and Influences Discuss the following statements, do you agree or disagree? It’s acceptable to have a friendly bet. There is no such thing as responsible gambling. The gambling industry should pay more for helping with addiction. It is wrong for young people to gamble. Young children should not have access to slot machines. The National Lottery is fun and not Gambling is a form of addiction. Gaming will lead to gambling for most people.
Social Gaming It may look like gambling… or have elements of gambling, but without a prize worth money or monitory value it’s not. So, spin the wheel type things (like the candy crush wheel)…or purchasing extra spins or rolls of a dice would be considered social gaming.
Gaming and gambling Video games You like a video game, you play it. You can get better weapons, better characters etc. in two ways: • By earning them through the game which can take days or • By paying money so you get them NOW. Bet them Special web sites are set up so you can gamble these upgraded weapons etc. that you've bought. It may not feel like you've been gambling but you've just lost your weapon upgrade that you paid good money for. What's PUBG? It's Player Unknown Battleground Sites. You can gamble what you've bought in your video game
Skins and Loot boxes – what do they cost? Buy one skin every week for £ 8. What is the cost over a year? £ 416 One loot box 3 times a week for £ 5. What is the cost over a year? £ 780 Imagine the cost of more expensive skins and loot boxes or buying them more than once or twice a week. Loot boxes contain random items, making the thrill of buying more or if you don’t get what you want.
Online gambling vs face to face Online versus ordinary betting / gambling Online activities can be more addictive than face to face gambling…. there is no one to try and stop you from betting / gambling too much.
Helping yourself • Self exclusion You can do this for just one betting shop or all of them. To do it for just one shop you go and ask them and take two passport type photos with you. It costs nothing. • More than one shop You have to ring a free phone number. Helping yourself • Online blocking software If you want to stop yourself from online gambling there's some software that can really help. There are two kinds of blocking software available: ü General blocking software, which can block any sites you want and set access permissions or parental controls. ü Gambling-specific blocking software, which is designed to block gambling websites. • Search online For smartphones and tablets, you can also search on the App store or the Android Market. For i. OS, on an i. Phone or i. Pad, use the parental blocker that's already inside the phone. • Password You'll need someone else to set the password for you.
