Galaxies S
Bell Work – Good Morning!! S Get out the materials that you need and put your backpack in the back of the room. S If you were absent or need to make up a test see me. S Get a scrap sheet of paper from the front and do the following: S Write down the four layers of space that we learned. S Write one descriptive fact for each layer.
Spiral Galaxies S These are made up of parts including the disk, bulge, and arms. S Spiral arms contain gas, dust, and stars. S The arms rotate around the center of the galaxy.
Spiral Galaxy S The bulge is the center of the galaxy. S Arms rotate around the bulge. S Most of the stars and dust are located here. S The disk is the entire galaxy, including all of its arms.
The Disk
Barred Spiral Galaxies S Same shape and composition as a spiral galaxy. S Have its arms connected or linked by a bar.
Elliptical Galaxies S Shaped like spheres or eggs. S Have minimal dust and gas between the stars. S Stars are mostly old. S Smaller than spiral.
Irregular Galaxies S Faint galaxies. S Have no definite shape. S Smallest galaxies. S Have few stars. S Not common.
The Center of the Galaxy S Most galaxies, we predict, have a supermassive black hole at their center. S These holes are millions or billions times greater than the sun. S These are invisible; we have to infer that they are there. S Black holes pull in gas from nearby stars and give off very bright light. S This bright light is called a quasar, which means seeming like a star.
Our Home – The Milky Way S The sun and all of our planets are part of this galaxy. S We are on the edge of our galaxy. S Why is it named this? S Our galaxy appears hazy or milky in appearance because of its many stars. S It is a spiral galaxy. S It is more than 100, 000 light years in diameter. S Distance between planets is measured in light years. S The bulge, or the area with most of the stars, is 26, 000 light years from the sun.
