HISTORY OF GALATAPORT Genoese settled in Galata during 12 th century with the concession granted by the Byzantium emperor Manuel Kommendos. In 1267, Galata became officially the settlement center of Genoese. By the time, Galata has been developed to be the commercial center of Byzantium. During the 14 th century this center turned in to a city with its borders. In 1349, the Genoses built Galata Tower, and then they constructed Karakoy, Kuledibi, Sishane, Azapkapi rampart successively. They established the first customs. During the conquest of Istanbul, in 1453, they remained neutral. After the conquest they signed an agreement with Fatih Sultan Mehmet, which gave them the rights to remain independent within the frontiers of the Ottoman Empire.

Before each agency had a float and a team of boatmen. t a The rights of construction and operation for 75 year of the wharfs were granted to a French General Manager of Fenerler (Lighthouse) Administration, Marius Michel. n b The construction started in 1892. u The construction of the 785 meter first wharf , from Tophane to Karaköy was completed in October 1895. l P In 1907 Marius Michel ran away and Osmanli Bankasi, with the help of the Londoner businessman Rothsch, took over the operation of the wharfs company. o r t w h a r f
HISTORY OF GALATAPORT The company constructed between 1912 and 1914 on the left side of today’s passenger hall, Merkez Rihtim Hani (the Central Wharf Inn), which is the head quarters of the Türkiye Denizcilik Isletmeleri A. S. (Turkish Navigation Management) and on the right, Cinili Rihtim Hani, ( the Tiled Wharf Inn) When the First World War started, the company had financial problems and all its assets were taken over by the Army. Once the Turkish Republic was established, the company sold all the installations and a new company named Istanbul Limanlar Inhisari A. S. (Istanbul Ports Monopoly) was established. After having been managed by many different companies and organizations, finally in 1984 the port was attached to the Turkish Navigation Management.

THE NEW PROJECT This historical district of 108 000 km² and 1. 2 km long will be reconstructed from Karaköy Wharf to Tophane. As it is a 2 nd degree historical site, this renewal will also include restoration of the historical buildings. A 400 million USD investment is estimated for the works which shall be accomplished on BOT basis within 30 months. The new site will comprise hotels, exhibition centers, shopping malls as well as an aquarium.
