Gagne’s Nine Levels of Learning • The core of this instructional design model is behaviorist but pulls in cognitivism. (Edu Tech Wiki, 2007) • The essential ingredients of teaching with this model are: 1. Rendering the knowledge or showing while instructing the skill(s) 2. Arrange for opportunity to practice and give feedback 3. Provides guidance to the learner (Edu Tech Wiki, 2007) 6/3/2015 Escobar-Poni 2

Gagne’s Nine Levels of Learning Corry display nicely “the way Gagne’s theory is put into practice … “ (Corry, 1996) 1. “First of all, the instructor determines the objectives of the instruction. These objectives must then be categorized into one of the five domains of learning outcomes. Each of the objectives must be stated in performance terms using one of the standard verbs (i. e. states, discriminates, classifies, etc. ) associated with the particular learning outcome. 2. The instructor then uses the conditions of learning for the particular learning outcome to determine the conditions necessary for learning. 3. And finally, the events of instruction necessary to promote the internal process of learning are chosen and put into the lesson plan. The events in essence become the framework for the lesson plan or steps of instruction. “ 6/3/2015 Escobar-Poni 3

Gagne’s Nine Levels of Learning • The stimulus alerts the group that learning is

Gagne’s Nine Levels of Learning • The stimulus alerts the group that learning is about to begin. • Present a good problem, a new situation, a multimedia advertisement, a question, raising the volume of your voice. (Eyre, 2015) (Edu Tech Wiki, 2007) • Describe the goal/objectives • Ensure that they understand why they need to learn this new information • Explain the process of what they will accomplish, five a demonstration if appropriate (Edu Tech Wiki, 2007) (Eyre, 2015) 6/3/2015 Escobar-Poni 4

Gagne’s Nine Levels of Learning • The stimulus alerts the group that learning is

Gagne’s Nine Levels of Learning • The stimulus alerts the group that learning is about to begin. • Present organized information, in logical and easy-to-understand manner. • Present a good problem, a new situation, a multimedia advertisement, a question, raising the volume of your voice. • Use a variety of media and styles to suit people with different learning styles (Eyre, 2015) (Edu Tech Wiki, 2007) 6/3/2015 Escobar-Poni 5

Gagne’s Nine Levels of Learning • Content is presented different , using different channel, from instructions on how to learn. • Use case studies, graphics, storytelling, or analogies • The learner demonstrate their knowledge by doing ‘something’ with the newly acquired knowledge, skills, or behavior. • The way they show depends on what they’re learning (Eyre, 2015) (Edu Tech Wiki, 2007) 6/3/2015 Escobar-Poni 6

Gagne’s Nine Levels of Learning • Provide feedback and reinforce any points as necessary

Gagne’s Nine Levels of Learning • Provide feedback and reinforce any points as necessary to the learner. • “Show correctness of the trainee’s response, analyze, learner’s behavior”, and if necessary, give step-by-step solution • Each member of the team should be able to complete the “task” show they learned the material or skill effectively. • This should be completed independently, without any help or coaching. (Eyre, 2015) (Edu Tech Wiki, 2007) 6/3/2015 Escobar-Poni 7

Gagne’s Nine Levels of Learning • The learner show retention by transferring their new

Gagne’s Nine Levels of Learning • The learner show retention by transferring their new knowledge or skill to situations different from the ones they’ve trained on. • Make you’re the learner has enough opportunity to use their learning • Schedule “practice runs (Eyre, 2015) (Edu Tech Wiki, 2007) 6/3/2015 Escobar-Poni 8

Gagne’s Nine Levels of Learning Each step is designed to help the learners understand retain information effectively. The Nine Levels of Learning “Model can be combines effectively with other training methods, such as 4 MAT and the ARCS model. ” (Edu Tech Wiki, 2007) 6/3/2015 Escobar-Poni 9
