Summary of educational context • North Haven Middle School is a public middle school

Summary of educational context • North Haven Middle School is a public middle school founded in 1960 that serves approximately 800 students, grades 6 -8 • The population is mostly white, non-Hispanic, Asian/Pacific Islander and Asian • NHMS offers 6 different athletic teams as well as 30+ clubs/organizations and growing! • Mission Statement: It is the mission of North Haven Middle School, together with the community, to provide a comprehensive, creative and challenging educational experience that develops independence, social-emotional growth, and an understanding of a diverse society”

Technology • BYOD (Bring your own device)- North Haven Middle School welcomes students to bring their own electronic device to school to use for various educational purposes. Doing so will prepare students for the digital world ahead of them and instill independence, creativity, responsibility and maturity into the impressionable middle school age. • digital Badges- Digital badges are beginning to be used in NHMS through the use of online learning games such as IXL, Membean and Moby. Max. Students complete assignments on these learning games/quests and earn mini-badges along the way as learning incentives. students at this school respond very well to incentives

Scenarios • Scenarios are “powerful tools used to aid in decision making in the face of uncertainty” (Mietzner and Reger 2005). Scenario building looks at creating multiple different scenarios for potential futures to minimize surprises and prepare for anything that may arise. ADVANTAGES • Trouble shooting and preparing for uncertainties • Makes it easier to implement changes disadvantages • Susceptible to being Overly • The people creating the scenarios must be in the field of education and know the district in order to be successful

Scanning • Scanning is “An ongoing effort to identify significant changes in the world beyond the organization or group doing the scanning. Typically, scanning is based on a systematic survey of current newspapers, magazines, Web sites, and other media for indications of changes likely to have future importance. Scanning focuses mainly on trends—changes that occur through time—rather than events—changes that occur very quickly and generally are much less significant for understanding the future” (World Future Society n. d). • Scanning takes data from many different contexts such as country, state, national and international databases and formally analyzes that data to make informed decisions about the future. • Scanning helps to identify changes that are occurring and build from there. challenges to researchers • may make it difficult for researchers to get reliable and valid conclusions and cause skewed data • Current trends are also different from place to place which can make it challenging for researchers to collect enough relevant data.

Educational Technology Trends • The digital footprint • Teachers, administrators, school social workers, guidance

Educational Technology Trends • The digital footprint • Teachers, administrators, school social workers, guidance counselors, etc. will need to work with students on improving the digital footprint they are leaving behind. • Many students don't realize the implications of what they post online and how it can affect them in the future. • North Haven Middle School will need to educate students on how to use the resources successfully and appropriately by teaching regular lessons and organizing educational field trips or motivational speakers to engage the students in knowing how much of an impact the digital footprint can leave on their permanent records. • • Using mobile devices for school work. Helps students to become more independent. Can be used easily in the classroom NHMS because they will need to create clear and defined boundaries around the appropriate use of devices.

Economic Trends • some other surrounding schools will get more funding than NHMS. •

Economic Trends • some other surrounding schools will get more funding than NHMS. • Schools are now funded through the use of local property taxes • NHMS is not one of the highest funded school systems, but it isn't one of the lowest either • it will seem that they are helped about half of the time, and are then expected to come up with the other half on their own • The demand for education professionals is rising. • According to the article “Future Trends Affecting Education” the demand for teachers, substitutes, principals and other educators will be significant • by 2020 the student population will increase drastically and the need for teachers will become greater

Demographic Trends • The United States is becoming more racially and ethnically diverse. •

Demographic Trends • The United States is becoming more racially and ethnically diverse. • the United States population is growing due to immigration • An interesting statistic is: "while about 81% of the population was white in 2000, that figure is projected to fall to 74% by year 2050" (Mackey, Reese and Mackey 2011). • The growing rate and role of Hispanics in America is becoming more and more apparent as time goes on. Mackey, Reese and Mackey state in their article that Hispanics typically have low levels of education, low levels or skill and low wage jobs • the number of homeschoolers in the United States is increasing. • there will be fewer students in the traditional classroom setting and potentially, a huge number of teachers could lose their jobs

Vision/plan • Five years from now, the classrooms at North Haven Middle School will

Vision/plan • Five years from now, the classrooms at North Haven Middle School will be fully equipped with the newest technology. There will be one 3 D printer located within the technology lab, Classrooms will be less traditional, as online blended learning will be the model of most content area classes. Students will have immediate access to classroom technology devices and will be taking notes and researching on them at any given time. it would not be uncommon to see differentiated groups of students working on their personal devices. This is all to be true because of the school-based committee that includes teachers and administrators who work hard to ensure that NHMS maintains rigorous technological expectations. • Some opportunities NHMS will have: • Greater student independence, New and diverse ways students will demonstrate mastery of a topic. Less formalized testing may ensue, Career readiness will become the norm, Personalization of lessons to the individual student, Families will work with their student to achieve learning outcomes according, Learning will occur any time any place and will be less rigid and time constricted to their personal interests • Challenges NHMS will face: • Students may become overwhelmed with career readiness mindset, Differences in opinion between different teachers and schools as to what truly demonstrates mastery, Teachers will need more planning time and more resources/materials to be able to personalize lessons to the varying levels of students, Less involved families may not be as involved as necessary for their student’s achievement

Plan for Change North Haven Middle School should prepare for these changes by: •

Plan for Change North Haven Middle School should prepare for these changes by: • 1. ) Analyzing technology trends to see where North Haven Middle School falls compared to other schools. • 2. ) Establish a committee made up of representatives from central office, teachers and administrators to discuss where NHMS falls and what the next steps should be. Committee should meet at least once monthly to plan for the future and how to introduce new concepts and technologies to faculty. • 3. ) Establish a budget with the town and superintendent for this committee to work with. Attempt to get parents and students involved in this effort by hosting events and building excitement about them so the town representatives can see how important this budget approval will be to everyone involved in the schoolnot just teachers. • 4. ) Provide training to all staff when implementing new technologies. Make training interesting with various approaches and hands on learning for the teachers. • 5. ) Set up Professional Development opportunities and workshops for all staff to attend and have staff involved in what new technologies and trends come into NHMS. Have suggestion boxes for teachers to add their input on new technologies or workshops they have heard of that they think would be beneficial for NHMS to look into.

Call to Action • The first steps that North Haven Middle School should take

Call to Action • The first steps that North Haven Middle School should take in order to start on the path to this future vision of education is engage staff in the promise of improved student scores on state-wide testing, more classroom resources, and improved student independence and college and career readiness. When change is brought on abruptly with no explanation, people are apt to disagree with it or close themselves off to it. Show a futuring video, such as “Innovation Killers” to staff so that they can better judge how they feel about change in the schools and potentially change their outlook on it. Preparing teachers for these new and exciting changes will encourage teachers to commit to a committee in the school made for bettering student achievement and improving personal fulfillment as educators. It is proven that charisma will encourage others to join in, and those part of the committee must exhibit enthusiasm about teaching, learning and further education and implementation at the school. All teachers have a dream and a future vision of education all their own, but the common thread at NHMS is that all of the teachers want to do good by their students.
