Future Simple There are 3 ways of describing
Future Simple
There are 3 ways of describing future events…. 1) Using “will”
The word WILL • We use the word “will” when a person volunteers to do something. I will help you with the homework later today. • We also use the word “will” when we make promises. Will you marry me?
The Future Simple Form • Tomorrow, I will call you. subject will V 1 subject + will + V 1
Let’s practice…. will dance(dance) • She _________ at the birthday party tomorrow. will sing (sing). • They _________ will buy (buy) • We __________ presents for the birthday boy. will be (be) • It __________ great!
The contracted form of “will” • If we want to use the shorter version of the word will, this is how it looks: ‘ll We attach it to pronouns : They’ll study for the test tonight. I’ll be a good girl. She’ll be there.
Those were all positive statements… What if we wanted to say them in the negative form?
Negative statements will dance not • She ______ (dance) at the birthday party tomorrow. will sing not • They _______(sing). will not ______ buy • We ______ (buy) presents for the birthday boy. be not will • It ______ (be) great!
Negative Form subject + will + not + V 1
Negative Form - contracted • When we want to write “will not” in a short form we use: won’t Don’t be confused! This is not the short version of would not!!!!
Contracted negative form examples • I won’t go to her house tonight. • They won’t be at the party. • We won’t do our homework tomorrow.
YES/NO Questions When we ask a yes/no question in the future form, we need to move the “will” to the beginning of the sentence…. .
Examples: • She will clean her room. Will she clean her room? YES, she will NO, she will not
Now turn these statements into yes/no questions… • He will run at the competition. Will he run at the competition? • I will be a good girl. Will I be a good girl? • We will not dance. Will we not dance?
WH questions…. • To create a WH question in the future form, we have to add the WH word in the beginning….
• We take the form of the yes/no question and add a WH word in front of it…. Yes/No question: Will she clean her room tomorrow? Wh question: How will she clean her room tomorrow? WH word YES/NO question
Your turn…. • Why / she / cry / during the movie? Why will she cry during the movie? • When / he / come home / tonight ? When will he come home tonight? • Where / we / sleep / tomorrow? Where will we sleep tomorrow?
Another way of describing future actions… 2) Using “to be going to…. . ”
To be going to… • I am going to party tonight. • He is going to sing. • They are going to dance. GOING TO is one unit and cannot be separated!!!!!
To be going to… • We use the words “going to” in the future simple when something is planned ( )מתוכנן , when there is a future plan to do something. We are going to drive to Tel Aviv on Saturday.
To be going to… subject + am/is/are + going to + V 1 I am going to party. He is going to sing. We are going to dance.
To be going to – YES/NO questions • She is going to clean her room. Is she going to clean her room? Am/ Is/ Are + subject + going to + V 1
To be going to - WH questions • She is going to clean her room. Why is she going to clean her room? When is she going to clean her room? How is she going to clean her room?
And yet another way of describing future events… 3) Using the present continuous
The Present Continuous • Remember that one of the functions of the present continuous is to talk about the future. Example: • I am meeting him this afternoon. • She is landing in Tel Aviv in two hours. • They are picking us up in the evening.
Remember the present continuous? Form: subject + am/is/are + V 4
