Future Science Projects - Manual Fire Fighting in Complex Facilities Fredrik Jörud www. europeanspallationsource. se
Goal • Cut time between fire alarm and successful extinguishing 2
Current situation • Fire truck at site within 10 minutes from alarm • Alarm to SOS requires alarm- organisation and alarmdelay for 3 -10 minutes 3
Improvements – no research required • Two- detector dependency = the alarm will by automatic reach SOS • Sprinkler activated (by heat) = signal direct to SOS • The emergency response team (ERT) will get breathing apparatus (BA) license to increase their capacity to assist the fire brigade. • Provide fire brigade with efficient assistance on – – Guidance from gate to point of ingress Power cut and grounding Protection from ionization radiation Protection from cryogenics 4
Potential areas of improvement – Enhance capacity of the Fire Brigade • Training & equipment to: – extinguish large fire (30 MW) in a large volume – prevent of flooding – handle hydrogen leakage 5
Potential areas of improvement – Enhance capacity of ERT • Provide ERT with efficient extinguishing capacity e. g. pyrotechnical generated aerosols (PGA) (The experiments confirmed that; PGA is a very efficient extinguishing agent, by weight 3 to 10 times as efficient as Halon 1301) 6
Potential areas of improvement – Justify safe conditions for ERT ingress • To achieve single headed extinguishing efforts, how to meet sufficient workers safety requirement in a complex industry? Decision manual needs to be developed. 7
Potential areas of improvement – Identification of the fire base • Mobile IR – sensors (resent thesis at Dep. of fire and technology LTH) • Improvement of the interface from fire alarm system for efficient information to ERT and the fire brigade (e. g. ipad info from site cameras to fire truck) 8
