Focus on Understanding Text Guided Reading resourcing to support the implementation of high-quality teaching

Focus on Understanding Text Guided Reading resourcing to support the implementation of high-quality teaching and learning programs Wollondilly Public School is committed to ensuring we deliver high quality reading instruction while working towards the NSW Premier’s Priority in reading by increasing the number of students in the top two NAPLAN bands. 2019 NAPLAN data indicates that only 44% of our Year 3 students and 16% of our Year 5 students performed in the top two bands in reading. In 2020, the NSW Do. E’s ‘Focus on Understanding Text’ professional learning program will be made available to schools. The program will focus on building and enhancing teacher knowledge and strategies for the explicit teaching of reading in Stages 2– 3. This professional learning will aim to improve teacher practice and student reading outcomes by reflecting on and improving pedagogy. ‘Focus on Understanding Text’ professional learning will help teachers ‘understand the reading process and teach reading explicitly, scaffold student understanding of increasingly complex texts, differentiate learning that reflects individual student learning needs, refine teaching practice and increase knowledge and resources to develop, support and maintain changed pedagogy’ NSW Do. E.

Teacher professional learning will also focus on training in the Reciprocal Reading strategy. Reciprocal

Teacher professional learning will also focus on training in the Reciprocal Reading strategy. Reciprocal Reading is a highly effective reading comprehension strategy, with an effect size of 0. 74 (Hattie, 2019). Reciprocal Reading develops the four reading strategies of summarising, predicting, clarifying and questioning. Strategic resourcing is required to support the implementation of ‘Focus on Understanding Text’ and ‘Reciprocal Reading’ teaching practices, in order to explicitly teach and improve student reading and comprehension. Wollondilly is seeking to support this reading approach using ‘Connectors’ and ‘Into Connectors’ guided reading text, which directly supports the ‘Reciprocal Reading’ and ‘Focus on Understanding Text’ strategies. ‘Connectors’ provide guidance for students in ways to read and discuss the text. Prompts on each page of the text support the readers as they engage in discussion based on the reciprocal reading strategies and additional strategies including visualising, inferring, giving opinions and making connections. Further information regarding the Reciprocal Reading strategy and Connectors text can be found at… https: //www. scholastic. com. au/education-home/literacy/into-connectors/
