Functions of the Simple Machines • Simple machines have three main functions: They transmit forces. They change the direction of a force. They modify the intensity (size) of a force.
5 Different Simple Machines • Lever (3 types) • The inclined plane (required force relates to slope) • The pulley (different types) • The Wedge • The Wheel and axel
Levers • Levers: These simple machines pivot around a FULCRUM. For a lever, there is always a fulcrum, a load, and a force. The type of lever depends on the positioning of these things.
First Class lever: see -saw Second class lever: wheelbarrow Third class lever: baseball bat
Inclined Plane • The slope of an inclined plane reduces the force required to lift an object. The greater the distance covered, the lesser the force required to move an object.
The Pulley Include a wheel and cord. They can change the direction of the force. Some can reduce the force required to lift something.
Wedges Allow us to pry objects apart.
Wheel and Axle
Simple Machines • In general, simple machines are designed to make life easier. Less work is required when we use simple machines. Work = force applied x distance
