What is functionalism? Functionalism is currently the most popular theory of the mind. But what exactly is a functionalist perspective? A functionalist perspective has to do with each intro independent piece working to together as a whole. Functionalist think that society is held together by a consensus. Functionalism has received criticism for neglecting the negative functions of a society.

Example The key to functionalism is the letter "f": the basic idea is that it all Fits together. Everything has a Function. Everything's Fine as is. So the worst thing anybody could do is change something! functionalism is merely a theory which states that the institutions of society all perform a useful function that is beneficial to all of society. Generally criticised for being very, very outdated.

How does functionalism function? Functionalism focuses on social structure and the organization of society. Functionalism see’s society as a system. Kind of like a puzzle functionalism focused on each individual piece to have a better outcome as a whole. In hope that all individuals will have a common goal. Talcott Parson’s argued that any social system has four basic functioning prerequisites: Adaptation, Goal attainment, Integration, and pattern maintenance. Adaptation refers to the relationship between the system and its environment. Goal attainment refers to the need for society to want to do better. Integration refers to the adjustment of conflict. And Pattern maintenance refers to the maintenance of basic pattern values.
