I shared with Pam during ELA Learning Architect about the growth my students accomplished with the phonics tools given to me through Phonics Pathway Cohort 1 (south). Not only was I extremely excited about the mastery of the students, but the students are actually recognizing the spell patterns of words and then applying the phonics skill to help them attack the word. THANKS!!!! Traci Dickens 8
FCS Phonics Pathway & Orton-Gillingham Comparison Study FCS Phonics Pathway (FCSPP) Orton-Gillingham (OG) Participating Schools Alpharetta ES Cogburn Woods ES Dunwoody Springs ES Medlock Bridge ES State Bridge Crossing ES Barnwell ES Mountain Park ES Spalding Drive ES Stonewall Tell ES Summit Hill ES Training Structure 32 hour training for 5 days across the course of one 30 hour training for 5 consecutive days semester. Participants are required to submit videos of implementation with students and receive feedback on each video. Content This course focuses on providing systematic and explicit phonics instruction through daily wholegroup phonics lessons and differentiated phonics instruction through small guided reading groups. This course is a more traditional OG approach that focuses primarily on phonological awareness and phonics (along with encoding/decoding). Participants also discuss how to teach fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension using the OG philosophy of multisensory, sequential, direct instruction. Cost $800 per participant $1675 per participant 9
FCSPP & OG Comparison Study Year 1 Results • OG students did not perform significantly better on Spring tests compared to FCSPP students after adjusting for demographic differences • OG and FCSPP students experienced significant growth on the Informal Decoding Inventory (IDI) • Neither group’s Benchmark Assessment System (BAS) performance changed significantly over time 10
