What is the Florida Standards Assessment? • A test that was designed to serve Florida students by measuring education gains and progress. • The FSA will show whether or not a student is mastering the new standards. • Information from the assessment is used to drive student instruction.
Changes in Student Expectations The Florida Standards Assessment (FSA) developed by the American Institutes for Research (AIR) demand students… • maintain an increased sense of accountability toward their own learning • develop a concept beyond an opinion and move to “support and evidence” • shift from mere memorization of terms to a deep understanding of meaning • operate in a more student-centered environment with built in peer collaboration • think in a more conceptual, analytical and global manner • utilize higher-order, critical thinking skills • transfer skills to new experiences 3
How will the test affect my child? 3 rd graders: The FSA exam is ONE of the 3 opportunities for promotion to fourth grade. 4 th-6 th graders: FSA, BAS, Journeys Test
How will the FSA affect my child? 4 th Grade Promotion Pass the • Must receive a Level 2 (or higher to pass) FSA Portfolio • Performance Based Portfolios • All 3 rd grade students will complete portfolio • Student must demonstrate mastery of each benchmark SAT 10? • Administered the last 2 weeks of school • Participants: • Students scoring a Level 1 on the FSA • Students without a passing reading portfolio

How are we helping your child? • FSA Camp – Reading and Math • Small Group Instruction - Differentiated Instruction • Modeling and Shared Activities based on standards that will be seen on the assessment • Weekly lab time and computer time in class to complete USA Test Prep.
What You can do to Help Your Child • Make them feel confident about the test. • Read with them every night. • Use flashcards for math. • Make sure that your child is stating text evidence when completing responses. • Ask your child questions • Check their homework daily.
What do I do… The Night Before the FSA? • Remind your child they are smart and will do great. • Make sure your child gets enough sleep. The Morning of the FSA? • Eat a normal breakfast. • Talk to your child. • Arrive at school early. • Be positive.
