Introduction • Naturally there are different periods in the life of a individual. Among these stages adolescence has an significant role. • The word „adolescence” is derived from a Latin word which means to grow to maturity. It is a transitional period from infancy to adulthood. • A teenager is a person between the age of 13 and 19.
Introduction • In psychology, frustration is a common emotional response to opposition. It arises from the perceived resistance to the fulfillment of individual will. • Some of the symptomps of frustration are stuborn refusal to take part in the activity that induces it, agressive behaviour and moodyness.
Introduction • The symptoms listed above are all present in the cliché portrait of the average teenager. • “In the adolescent population it is estimated that fifteen to twenty percent of all adolescents will have at least one episode of Frustration”. (Essau & Dobson, 1999) • As adult depression has it’s roots in adolescence, we must act now in order to prevent another generation to fill psychologists’ waiting rooms and be trimmed every year by the spring suicide wave.
The Causes • An adolescent is subjected to a number of stressful changes such as on set of puberty-related deviations, emergence of more advanced cognitive abilities, selfimage, intimacy, relation with adults and peers and transition to new roles in the society. • Adolescence is a time of experimentation, idealism, conflict and uncertainty. Because, during this period an individual is neither a child nor an adult. During this period, the individual’s standing is vague and there is confusion about the roles the individual is expected to play
The Causes • The failure to adapt to all these new factors and the need for social acceptance and confirmation induce a deep, gloomy feeling of unfulfillment in most teens. This is the base on which frustration builds up.
The Effects • In positive cases, this Frustration will build until a level that is too great for the individual to contend with, and thus produce action directed at solving the inherent problem. • In negative cases, however, the individual may perceive the source of frustration to be outside of their control, and thus the Frustration will continue to build, leading eventually to further problematic behavior like violent reaction.
Solutions • Frustration is a sword with two edges. It can bring us up, as easy as it can bring us down, to the ground. • The key to a mentally healthier, happier teen population is to keep frustration level as low as possible. • This can be done through: • Centering the act of teaching on the needs of the student, rather than on the demand of the society. • Establishment of counseling zones in every school will help inwiping out the negative outlook prevailing in the minds of children. • Train students to set achievable goals which will give them confidence after reaching them.
