Lenin as orator, 1920 The Bolsheviks were a small but tightly disciplined group of radicals obedient to the will of their leader, Vladimir Lenin (1870 -1924). Here he is addressing Red Army soldiers in Sverdlov Square, Moscow, in 1920. At the time, the Bolsheviks were mopping up the last of the anti. Bolshevik forces and were fully engaged in a war with Poland. The fate of the Revolution depended on the fighting spirit of the Red Army soldiers and on their loyalty to Lenin. Stalin Becomes Dictator SECTION 1 Joseph Stalin- Takes control 1. Stalin starts an industrial Revolution in the USSR. Command economy —government makes all economic decisions 5 year plan > pre-determined production. Set amounts of goods are produced and are not changed 2. Agricultural Revolution- He took the 25 million small farms and replaced them with “Collective Farms” 3. Collective farms are owned and worked by hundreds of families instead of individuals. *

Stalin’s legacy- destroy religion, he saw it as a threat to his power, Kulaks- Wealthy peasants who resist, Result? ? ? Gulags– prison camps for those whom opposed, OR just in case. Political prisoners. This got crazy. Reasons for arrest- Having a friend in another country People a made to accuse each other to get more workers for the Gulags. Practicing their faith, making a remark about the govt. Farmers or factory workers, or managers who didn’t make thei goal, zookeeper because an animal got sick. *
