Framework • Based on POLITIS research project: „Building Europe with new citizens“ – Positive examples of active immigrants – First generation • POLITIS assumptions and starting points – EU is a democratic polity that rests on and requires the civic participation of citzens – Europe needs immigrants for demographic reasons – Activation and participation of immigrants is a an asset for democratic Europe • In their own interest, mainstream associations have to win immigrants as active members • Transfer of findings through adult education
POLITIS findings • Little and fragmented research – Immigrants‘ participation is on average lower compared to native population – Uneven participation level with respect to immigrants‘ national origin – [Factors at individual level as explanation: Education, social status, personality, participation rights] – Uneven participation level with respect to receiving countries • Political and civic culture of receiving country influences level of immigrants‘ activism • Attitude and practices of mainstrean associations matter
