FROM PLANT TO FUEL
How it is Made It is grown in countries like Brazil or the U. S. It is semi-perennial, meaning the same plant can be harvested and regrown with uprooting it The 37 year old system used in Brazil is based on the most efficient agricultural technology in the world for sugar cane cultivation Sugar cane creates a residual waste, called baggase, which is used to produce heat and energy
Why it’s better Sugar cane ethanol is bio-friendly because it uses plants, not the finite supply of oil Sugar cane ethanol is an alcohol based fuel This type of fuel can be made from corn as well It can actually be made from any type of plant than contains a high amount of sugar Many cars will run on this fuel but only some are built for it
Corn Ethanol Production It starts with grinding corn kernels into a powder It is heated and turned into a liquid like starch The starch is broken down into sugars Yeast added to make ethanol It is then mixed with 90% water and 10% alcohol It is then heated to fuel cars
Amount of use This chart shows the amount of bushels of corn used for certain things (out of one million bushels) The amount bushels used for ethanol use is 3, 437. 5, which is 26%
Amount of use II This chart shows the increase in the use of ethanol production between 1980 and 2005 The amount produced in 1980 was about 2. 5 million gallons It increased from that to almost 4, 000 million gallons between than and 2005
