From Data to Knowledge: Biodiversity and Ecosystem the Ecopotential scenario P. Blonda, P. Mazzetti/ 23 rd October 2017
ECOPOTENTIAL at a glance Improving future ecosystem benefits through earth observations What question are you answering? State and pressures of ecosystems and ecosystem services? • ECOPOTENTIAL aims at creating a unified framework for ecosystem studies and management of protected areas (PA) • Focus on internationally recognized PAs in Europe and beyond in a wide range of biogeographic regions • Assess the current state and estimate the future evolution of ecosystem services by applying macro-system ecology concepts
Operational objectives EODESM system (1) ECOPOTENTIAL aims at creating a unified framework for ecosystem studies and management of protected areas (PA). • Best use of Earth Observation (EO) and additional multi-source (e. g. , COs) monitoring data through the development of the Earth Observation Data for Ecosystem Monitoring (EODESM) system • EODESM integrates EO data, biophysical variables, and ancillary data for providing Land Cover (LC), habitat and ecosystem maps as well as and change maps. FAO-LCCS 2 taxonomy is used, with translations to FAO Land Cover Meta language (LCML) Credit: R. Lucas (UNSW), D 4. 2

Operational objectives Modelling for new services (3) • Assimilate EO data/products in modelling approaches to: Ø Understand ecosystem dynamics and functioning as well as resilience to natural and anthropic pressures; Ø Assess the conservation status of ecosystems and their services; Ø Provide the evidence and knowledge base for nature based solutions to address environmental and societal challenges, with linkages to other EU projects (e. g. ERA_Planet-Strand 1); Ø Future PAs delineation • Provide open and interoperable access to data and knowledge through a GEO Ecosystem Virtual Laboratory Platform, fully integrated in GEOSS.
