From cells to organisms Reese
Cells n Multi-cellular organisms contain a large number of highly specialized cells. Humans for example (just to name a few) have skin cells, nerve cells, sex cells, and blood cells, etc…
Tissue n Tissue is a group of cells that work together to perform a specific job.
Muscle Tissue n n Function: contracts and relaxes to allow movement. Examples: skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle, and smooth muscle
Nerve Tissue n n Function: transmits messages through the body. Examples: brain, spinal cord, nerves
Epithelial Tissue n n Function: covers the outside of the body and lines the organs. Example: Skin
Connective Tissue n n n Connective Tissue Function: connects, supports, and protects other tissues Examples: ligaments, tendons, cartilage, bone, and blood
Organ n n An organ is a structure made up of two or more tissues that work together to carry out a specific job. Examples of organs: Heart, lungs, liver, etc…
Organ System (11 systems) n n An organ system is made up of all the organs that work together to do a specific job. Example: Your digestive system has many organs such as the liver, stomach, intestines, etc. . in order to break down food that your cells can use.
Organism n An organism is a living thing. Multicellular organisms such as humans are made up of cells, tissue, organs, and organ systems.
Population n Group of organisms of the same species.
